My Husband Has Eaten Very Little In 2 Months

I appreciate any feedback I can get from this forum. My husband is 47 years old and in overall good health and a nonsmoker. I am baffled (and he is as well) about his almost complete loss of appetite since early July. He had a dental cleaning appointment in early July and came home saying his gums were a bit tender from the cleaning. He didn't want to eat that day but that made sense because of the tenderness of his mouth. The problem is that his appetite never returned and I'm not sure it's a coincidence from the cleaning or if something simultaneously is going on. When I say he has no appetite.. I mean NO appetite. He literally went for that first week and ate nothing. I was worried of course and insisted that he eat something toward the end of that week. He has survived on an occasional meal of rice or a handful of pretzels for the past 2 months. If he can get anything at all down...starchy bland food seems to be the only thing he can tolerate. He did go to his doctor about 1 month ago and they did extensive blood work testing. The blood tests all came back within normal ranges and his doctor recommended that we keep an eye on his weight as he is losing weight..and to call him (the doctor) back in 1 month. He can stand to lose some weight as he is 5'10" and weighed right at 240 2 months ago. But now he is down to around 215 since this started. I didn't understand this 'wait and call me in a month' approach as something is obviously wrong even if the blood testing didn't show any trouble. For the first few weeks of this he amazingly seemed to have energy although I do not know from where. Now he does get weak if he doesn't eat but absolutely doesn't want anything at all. His doctor prescribed some vitamins and told him to drink Ensure and gatorade which he has been doing. I don't think an Ensure every day or 2 and the same amount of gatorade is enough nutrition for him. I am very worried and don't want to wait the month his doctor told us to wait so I went ahead and insisted on a referral for a complete upper and lower gi tests which he goes in for this week. ...Are we on the right track? Has anyone ever heard of this before? Absolutely no other symptoms. Just the complete loss of appetite for 2 months. He simply cannot/will not eat. He has had his gall bladder and appendix removed from prior surgeries a few years back. Also, he reminds me that he did go through something similar to this a couple of years back although not as severe and his appetite returned within a matter of a couple of weeks. It has been 2 months this time. He went to his doctor that first time this happened as well and the doctor really didn't know and didn't want to pursue any testing after my husband's appetite returned. We let it go at that but are just baffled this time. Any help or advice at all is very much appreciated.

Has any stress happened in his life could he be anxious about anything, how is work going? Does he eat at work, how is his drinking does he get plenty of Fluids, I wonder if you let him go his own way if he will realise he has to eat, and that like a kid he is getting attention.from not eating! I know it sounds simplistic but I have found sometimes answers are under our noses, Please let us know how it goes it is intrigueing.
