8 weeks pregnant and no heartbeat

The doctors say that I am 8 weeks pregnant.  I went in for an ultra sound today and it was not good.  Both my doctor and the head doctor of the whole OBGYN practice told me that my yolk sac looks abnormal and it is pushing downward as is if it is trying to exit my cervix.  On top of this, they could not find a heartbeat.  Both doctors suggested that I have a D&C but I asked for one last ultra sound for next week just to confirm.  I have never had any type of bleeding or discomfort throughout the whole preganacy.  Do you think I should have any hope or am I really likely to miscarry?

I went through the same thing, had two miscarriages and then got pregnant. At 6 weeks we saw a heartbeat which was so wonderful but then by the 8th week there was no heartbeat.  I had a miscarriage at home that weekend.  I was scheduled for a D&C.  I am pregnant again around 6 weeks and will have a US done this Friday. I am scared but am prepared to handle the situation in a more realistic way.  I am seeing an infertitlity doctor and she recommends a D&C to check the fetus and find out if there are any chromosomal abnormalities.  It is very important to insist that your doctor sends the fetus to the lab for testing.  If they find out that there are no chromosomal abnormalities then your doctor (Specialist) should find out what is causing the miscarriage.  I am very sorry that you are going through this and feel your pain. I have had 3 miscarriages total and only one D&C but the fetus was not tested in a lab.  So please ask your doc to do a D&C and test the fetus.  Very important information. My recommendation is to see an infertility doctor who specializes in miscarriages etc.  and not an OBGYN.  Good luck to you and please do not loose hope.  Just give yourself some time.

There is no harm in waiting for a couple of weeks, so I would not take precipitous action. More than anything you want to sure, really sure, one way or the other.

As far as the heart beat goes- It generally does tend to be really hard to find before the 10th week. As was said - I also have a friend who went through almost the exact same thing. Her yolk sacs almost looked abnormal and as though they were trying to push down through her cervix. But She gave birth a few months ago to a perfectly healthy baby girl. Hopefully that will raise your spirits - Stay strong.

I'm so sorry you are going through this.  I'm not sure as far as the yolk sac looking abnormal but I do have a friend who was pregnant and went to the doctor at 8 weeks also and they could not find a heart beat.  7 months later she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.  8 weeks is very early on so I would think by next week or so you would be able to find the heart beat.  I say wait the week and pray for the best.  Good luck!!
