Can anyone possibly translate what this CT Scan result means??

Please please someone explain what in the heck this means!!! It is Friday and I am freaking out that I can't talk to my doctor until Monday! :(

CT OF THE NECK WITH INTRAVENOUS CONTRAST - 06/21/12

HISTORY: Enlarged tonsils.

TECHNIQUE: Axial computed tomography of the neck with intravenous contrast administration per standard protocol with coronal and sagittal reformatted images; 100 ml Optiray 350 intravenously at left antecubital fossa without incident.

COMPARISON: None directly available.

Findings: Motion artifact is noted in examination. The parotid glands and submandibular glands are unremarkable in appearance. The thyroid gland is largely unremarkable as imaged. There is mild prominence of the adenoid soft tissues, slightly more prominent than the left with minimal mass effect at the airway. This is best appreciated at axial image 30. Consider direct visualization as a mass is difficult to exclude. There is no definite evidence of fluid collection/abscesses in the neck. Of note, the patient's head is rotated toward the left and therefore this may cause an atypical appearance to the central airway. This must be correlated clinically, as again, a mass is difficult to exclude given this image appearance. The vascular structures are intact and unremarkable as imaged. There is no discrete lymphadenopathy within the neck although there are bilateral subcentimeter lymph nodes, nonspecific. The imaged paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells are fairly well aerated. A mucous-retention cyst versus polyp is suspected at the inferior aspect if the left maxillary sinus. The osseous structures are intact. The lung apices are unremarkable.

Impression:
1.  Prominence of the adenoid soft tissues. There appears to be soft tissue prominence at the left aspect of the airway with some component of mass effect which could be associated with the patients head tilted toward the left. A mass is difficult to exclude given this imaging appearance and clinical correlation is requested. Direct visualization may be helpful if needed.

2.  Nonspecific subcentimeter lymph nodes within the neck; no evidence of lymphadenopathy.

3. Mucous-retention cyst versus polyp at the inferior aspect of the left maxillary sinus.

Well, the online doctors picture of things sounds good. That is why it is best not to freak out before you see the doctor. Yes, getting your tonsils out when you are not a kid is tough. It will be painful and there is risk of bleeding. Sounds like it is necessary though. Just try to have someone around for a few nights during and after the surgery. They probably can give you some pain pills for a few days if you need them. Let me know what the ENT says.

I spoke with my regular doctor toady and as soon as I get back from vacation I am to go see the ENT as soon as possible, I meet with him July 5th. They found a cyst in/on my adenoid and I will be undergoing a adenoid and tonsil removal :( I am 37 years old and I have heard it hurt so much worse when you are older... .

I "Asked a Professional" online and went ahead and paid the 35.00 to get the exact answer...lol I know, dumb, but I am resting tonight easier ;)

Your adenoids are swollen.
The imaging technique makes it look like you have a mass, so they are saying someone needs to look in your throat.
Regular lymph nodes..not bad, not good.
Mucous retention cyst in a sinus. This is incidental and is not a problem. Most people never know they have these.

So as long as there is not a mass in your throat..probably this is a negative scan.

If you are having difficulty breathing then I suggest the ER.

This could take care of 2 problems, they can help you with the panic, and they can visualize your throat as well.
Let me know if you have further questions.

From Dr Thomas of just ask the doctors ...

Hello to you mkh9:

I wanted to start off by telling you thank you so much for the input on your comment. I did go to an ENT June 7th and they gave me medication for GERD. He told me to take that for a month and see what happened. After about two and a half weeks of taking the medication I called my regular doctor and told him that my stomach hurt with the meds and that I had massive headaches with it, he told me to come in.  That is when they did this CT Scan of my neck. My regular doctor said that they didn't really think all of it was GERD. I had my scan done Thursday and got the paper results Friday. I will get a phone call from my primary doctor on Monday but I get so anxious about what is wrong with me I can't stand to wait! lol...my tonsil on my left side is swollen and has been for a couple months now and both my primary doctor and the ENT noticed this along with my uvula is elongated. I get like "snot" or drainage if you will, in like a ball that does not go down like it use to. I am leaving for vacation Thursday to D.C. and don't want to have any problems out there for sure! I just hope it is something that is cureable and QUICKLY cureable! I am so thankful to your reply, it really puts my piece of mind at ease at least until the doctor tells me himself what is actually wrong. I know my primary doctor said they were doing this scan too to make sure it wasn't cancer. So of course, that scares the crap out of me!!! I am glad to hear that yours was just a muscle knot! I hope mine is like that...lol

Are you seeing an ENT?  It sounds like something may be blocking partially the adenoids in the sinus or nasal area. . They didn't say in the scan for sure there is a tumor or cancerous looking mass but they said they can't rule out a mass. Well a mass could be a cyst , or benign tumor or anything they even said they didn't know and it maybe due to the way your head was turned. I acutally know how you feel to some degree (I'm not you) but I had a hard lump in my throat and the doctor had me get a CT scan. It was a hard painful lump and I had it for a while. They were thinking tumor or salivary gland blockage. I was lucky and it turned out to must be a muscle knot believe it or not. So it is best to try not to freakout or overstress until you really know. They did mention cyst and poyp which are not cancerous.  So that is good news but the polyp or cyst may be blocking the sinus area. It doesn't sound like it is in an area to block your trachea so you should be ok that way. Since it sounds like a mucosy cyst or polyp in the sinus and ( maybe a mass but it they said it may be due to the way your head was turned)  and that might be draining and causing you to swallow. That sounds very treatable. When do you see your doctor? It sounds like the doctor will have to put the results of the scan together with what he finds himself. I am sorry if I made you more stressed, I didn't mean to. I think you will be ok.

I have been having problems swallowing for about a year now; went through sinus surgery and many tests. I wonder if the cyst is blocking my airway and how SERIOUS this is?? I am scared to death I will quit breathing! I am guessing they ruled cancer out?

I am not a doctor but it sounds like there is a cyst or polyp in the left maxilary sinus and possible tumor (benign or otherwise) in the adenoid area but they are not sure because your neck/head was turned somewhat to the side.. The rest sounds normal. It sounds like they are a bit unsure.
