sprained ankle

I am 64 yrs old, fell in the barn and sprained my ankle , altho I did not go to have it xrayed or see a doctor, I put cold compresses on it for 2 week(this all happend 3 weeks ago) still have swelling and pain altho the pain is not real bad  about a 3 most days and of course at night after being on it all day it is about a 4 I also have some pretty bad ropy vaicose veins that go from my knee to my shin bone I am just concerned that something eles might be going on, It seems to me it should be getting better, Do you think I need to get an xray ??? or does it take alot more time to heal than I am giving it. Am sure I pulled some ligaments ,  I also get pain shooting up my leg and pain in the ankle it self.     Thank You for any information you can give me - Honbun

I know its a tough one isnt it when you need something and you are not covered those Xrays can be expensive,Is ther not one of those clinics near you sometimes they will help pay the cost if you come under the earnings rule, Perhaps you need to rest it more, maybe you are doing too much, if its swollen thre is the Possibility you Fractured it.Try Ibebrufen for the pain it is also an anti-inflamatory,3 weeks is not too long foe a nasty sprain but if the Pain continues you made need to go and get it looked at. Good Luck
