Strange SLIGHT clicking noise from neck/ears

I wasn't sure where to put this, so I put it in family medicine.

I'm a 21 year old male. I've noticed when it's quiet in the room and I'm sitting in a chair, I hear/feel very very light clicking noises every few seconds, sometimes in bursts. It feels like it's coming from my neck, but it happens when I'm completely still and again, it's a very light almost ticking kind of noise/feeling. What could this be?

Further information:

-When I put on "in-ear-phone" or "canalphones" to isolate outside sound, the noise is gone.
-If I stand instead of sit, the noise is gone.
-If I sit but angle forward from my torso, the noise is gone.
-If I sit straight but angle my head forward with my chin toward my chest, the noise is gone.
-Sometimes I can't reproduce the noise, no matter how I try to sit. After playing with all these positions, for example, the noise has disappeared.

I'm 85% sure of the above, but sometimes it's hard to tell since the noise is so slight.

One similar thing I can think of, as an analogy is when you're lying in bed on a pillow and you can hear your pulse. I guess something is rubbing on the pillow (an artery or something).

It feels like I'm hearing something from inside my head/neck haha. Anyway it's pretty puzzling and very slight but I was wondering if anyone knew what it could be!

Thanks,

Flaviu

I can hear a strange ticking noise from a pillow on the sofa to my right side........I've just read these entries and I was looking for an answer such as "the ticking that comes from a pillow (that only I can hear by the way) is caused by some strange dust insect or something" INSTEAD I have just found the answer connected directly to me which is real and true. I have TMJ and thought I was going mad hearing this noise, but as it goes it's quite normal for someone with this disorder. Thank you very much for clarifying this to me.

This sounds like one of two things or both.  TMJ dysfunction can certainly cause you to hear clicking sounds that no one else can hear, since your jaw bone is right in front of your ears.  Or, it could be a problem with the cervical spine (the neck area).  Both of these issues can actually be addressed by a chiropractor.
