Is it possible to discontinue Atenolol?

I have been on Atenolol for many years. Started out at 50mg. Several years ago my doctor said I could go off it as I was on Norvasc and Diovan. Based on a 24 BP monitor, it was discerned I did not need the Atenolol. I was able to cut my dose to 25mg. but cannot get off it. I become irritable, jittery and have a short fuse. Recently, became a vegan and my BP has dropped so I tried to d/c the atenolol once again. Will I ever be able to get off this med. my BP is 101/60 just on 5 mg. of Norvasc.

Thanks for the feedback. Checking with my physician today. I was not aware that Atenolol was not used as a first line anti-hypertensive. I know Atenolol has been used off label to quell stage fright and anxiety before a major exam, like med boards, etc. It is a beta blocker and works by affecting the response of nerve impulses in certain parts of the body, like the heart.

You have an interesting question.  I would contact the U.S. FDA and fill out an adverse effect form. As you know Atenolol is not used anymore as a first-line anti-hypertensive. Lisonopril and Losarten are far more effective with fewer side effects. A BP of 101/60 is to low. Much too low. I would have your physician contact the manufacturer of the drug Atenolol (and the U.S. FDA) for suggestions. In the case of the FDA a specific individual is assigned jurisdiction over a specific drug. Both the FDA and the manufacturer will respond to questions posed by a medical professional.
