my 11year old son fell the side of his foot is a little swollen and bruised and says he has shooting pains
He needs to go ,to an emergency room immediately. There is a window of opportunity for treating some fractures. They will give him an x-ray or MRI evaluation. It may be nothing but a sprain, however there may be damage that requires stabilization.
Sounds like at minimum a sprain or strain, but you need to take him in for x-raying to ascertain whether there is any kind of break, even a hairline fracture, contributing to his symptoms.
