What's the actual window period

Hi everyone, why is my doctor repeatedly asking me to test at 1 year post last exposure. I tested negative at 6 months but my doctor insist since I slept with a positive partner for quite long time, I have to repeat the test to rule possible infection. Can an HIV window period extent because of multiple sexual exposure with someone positive
