I went to the ER three weeks ago, on August 25th. The PA in the emergency room used a tongue depressor to check my throat because I told him it was itchy. I then noticed that the desk in which he placed the tongue depressor before he used it to check my throat had blood on it. So it is very likely that the tongue depressor had blood too. The blood on the desk was definitely wet. I am now afraid that the tongue depressor was contaminated with HIV positive blood, and I was exposed to it. The tongue depressor touched my tongue, and since the mouth is a mucus membrane, I have been panicking that maybe I was infected with HIV.
For the past two days my arms and legs have been itchy, and also some parts of my face and ears. Although, there is no rash. Could this be a seroconversion symptom?
I also want to clarify that I am not sexually active, and I do not use any drugs so I do not share needles with anyone. The day the incident happened in the ER I had an HIV test, and of course it was negative. I wanted it as proof that I had nothing that day. So if anything happened, it was because of the contaminated tongue depressor.
Please help me. How likely is this? I was reading the CDC website, and they stated that blood entering the mouth is a risk, but other websites say is not. I'm scared to death and I can't even sleep. Please help me.
