If no antibodies to HIV are detected, this does not mean the person has not been infected with HIV. It may take several months after HIV infection for the antibody response to reach detectable levels, during which time rapid testing for antibodies to HIV will not be indicative of true infection status. For most people, HIV antibodies reach a detectable level after two to six weeks

The early first-generation enzyme immunoassays (EIA) utilized viral lysate as a source of HIV antigens. The addition of patient's serum containing antibodies directed toward these HIV antigens resulted in antigen-antibody binding to viral antigens on the assay, which were detected with a spectrophotometer. Because of problems with the contamination of viral antigens with the cell culture proteins required to isolate the HIV antigens, the specificity was reduced to around 95%.[2]

The second-generation EIAs utilized HIV recombinant Escherichia coli –derived HIV antigens. This resulted in a reduction of the window period for detecting early HIV infection from 56 to 42 days. Although false-positive results still resulted from bacterial protein contamination, this assay had an improved specificity of 99.5%.[2]

The third-generation EIAs utilize conjugated HIV antigens in a new "sandwich" format. In this assay, conjugated HIV antigens are used to detect bound antigen-antibody complexes on the assay. This "sandwich" format of antigen-antibody-antigen results in even higher specificity and dramatically reduces the window for detection of HIV infection to approximately 22 days.[3] These third-generation EIAs are the most common conventional screening assays currently used in the United States.

Recently, fourth-generation antibody assays have been introduced worldwide. These assays further reduce the window to detection of HIV infection by the additional detection of the p24 antigen. Utilizing this antigen and antibody combination, acute HIV infection can be detected prior to the presence of HIV-specific antibodies.[4] Currently, there is only one FDA-approved fourth-generation antigen antibody assay available in the United States.[5] Fourth-generation EIAs should be expected to replace third-generation EIAs in the near future. See Fourth-Generation HIV Tests.

Doesn't matter when youi "elected to test', to obtain a conclusive negative test result is 3 months post exposure. Now you can do whatever you want to do.

So should i wait 5 big days and retest, whats the likley hood off testing poitive then or will i be easting 50 dollars. I was always told bu health care providers is that the window period covers the entire popualation People that generally take three mths to show poz are sick peoplw with transplants, Chemo, Ex.. It generally takes 25 days to produce enough antibodys to show pos on a antibidy test thats why they now say test out to 6 weeks (Aid Alliance Of NC)(Director of ID UNC) But i elected to test on the 11 week to be sure

A negative result with this test does not mean that you are definitely not infected with HIV, particularly when exposure may have been within the previous 3 months.
