Sharp pains going through chest after surgery

My husband had 4 by pass surgery four weeks ago and still has sharp pains that shoot through his chest.  
He says it is not like pains when having a heart attack.
Is this normal after by pass surgery

Sometimes there is a problem with the healing of the sternum, loose wires that hold the sternum in place, infection of the sternum, etc.  However, it takes 1 to 2 years to completely heal after a open-heart bypass so those problems may be ruled out
