I am a 60-year old male. I have been treated for hypertension since my 20's and high cholesterol since my 40's. My numbers were in normal range under medication and I felt great, no symptoms. Three years ago, my doctor was considering lowering the dosage on my meds, but suggested that I go for a coronary calcium test first. My score was over 1400. I immediately went on a dry vegan diet (Caldwell Esselstyn, China Study, Forks Over Knives). I lost over 20 pounds, feel even better than before, and I went for my 2-year follow up scan and my score came back over 1600! I didn't expect it to go down, but didn't think it would go up either. My doctor said it is OK as long as it doesn't go up more than 20% in one year. Well, it seems to me that 20% is a LOT when you are doing 20% over 1600 vs. 20% over 160. My doctor does not seem alarmed, does labs, check up and treadmill only once a year. I feel great, no symptoms. I go hiking and have good energy levels. I am more active and in better shape than most of my friends. Recently, I was turned down for Long Term Care Insurance because of this and it really made me think that maybe I should be more concerned than I am about my situation. I have not had an angiogram, nor do I want to have one unless necessary. At 60, I want to plan my retirement. I would like to work another 6-7 years, but would seriously consider moving that up to 2 years if I cannot reasonably expect to live into my 70s. While no one has a crystal ball, with my current situation, what should I realistically expect regarding my health and longevity over the next 10-20 years? Thank you.
