after stent/angioplasty question

hi! I'm a newbie here from Philippines. Hope someone can help me. I'm sorry for the terms, correct me if I'm wrong. My grandmother had an angioplasty/stent last Sunday 09.19.10. Every night she can't breath/shortness of breath. And her blood pressure is unstable from time to time. Is this normal?

And the first hospital we went, they told us that her lungs had water inside when her heart attack occurred. This is why we're thinking that's the reason why she can't breath every night since after the procedure.

And what we'll we going to expect after the procedure. I tried to search the net, but can't find answers. Thank you so much for those people who can help me.

By the way she's 74, smoker and diabetic. I'm not sure if she is high in cholesterol, no recent heart attack, its her first time. but one artery is dead, 2 blockage was found in one artery only. Thank you again.

It could be a sign of heart failure. How long ago did she have the stent? and do you know what her EF is?

Your terms are correct. The expectation post angioplasty are no angina (chest pains) nor heart failure symptoms.  But there may be some confusion regarding heart attack and heart failure. A heart attack damages heart cells (Myocardio Infarction, MI) and can happen with or without symptoms.  If there are no symptoms, it is medically termed silent heart attack.

Damaged heart cells from a heart attack impairs heart wall movement causing weak contractility, and as a result blood backs up into the lungs and fluids leak into the lungs causing pulmonary edema (fluids in lungs). Often happens when one is lying down as gravity helps pull fluids back into the lungs.  This causes a dry cough, hyperventalation, choking sensation, etc.  I had congested (fluids in the lung) heart failure several years ago. My heart rate was higher than normal 115 at rest...is grandmother's heart rate higher than normal.

Your grandmother may be experiencing heart failure.  I was hospitalized for that condition and wasn't discharged from the hospital until the oxygen level in my blood was normal.  Grandmother should go to emergency care for the shortness of breath and lung congestion.  Unless, properly treated the end result can be cardiac arrest, and the condition will not improve without medical intervention.

Sorry to hear of your grandmother's health, and you are very special to be concerned. Thanks for sharing and if there are any other questions, please fel welcome to post.
