Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) is a very serious heart defect, but can be repaired without surgery. It can be repaired through cardiac catheterization. A closure device is placed on the catheter tip. The catheter is introduced through your right femoral artery or vein, in the area of your groin, through a tiny incision. Then it will be inserted into your heart, via your artery or vein. More than likely, you will not feel a thing. You will be highly sedated.
If you have other congenital defects or problems within your heart that require surgery, then surgery will be performed. Otherwise the surgery the doctors speak of is with the catheterization repair. Have they told you different?
Do you have fatigue or atrial arrhythmias? I just read that this is common with ASD. Presently you are experiencing very destructive forces within your heart. The longer you wait, the more the damage will be to your heart, pulmonary artery and lungs.
This is a very simple defect to fix, so get with it! Get it repaired while you still have ADEQUATE BI VENTRICULAR FUNCTION, and only moderate PAH, or pulmonary artery hypertension.
Good luck,
Jack
