You really haven't told us much. Was the patient in AFib prior to surgery?
I can say that I believe the Mitral Valve is the valve that can cause an enlargement of the left atrium. An enlarged left atrium is a key cause (I believe it is causal) of Atrial Fibrillation. That said, the "replacement" or "repair" (My case) is not causal for AFib.
As I went into Mitral Valve surgery with an existing AFib condition, a "maze" procedure was done as it, like an ablation, is a procedure that can cure AFib. Again, in my case, and I asked just as I came out of anesthesia if I was in normal sinus rhythm. I was, and I remained that way for about 30 days. So, my personal experience says post surgery is NSR.
I imagine it depends on a lot of factors. The doctor owes you an answer your questions. My Mom had her aortic valve replaced and 2 bypasses at the age of 86 and had some irregularities in her heart rhythm for a time. She had about a 3 month recovery and went 6 years with no problems. From what I've been reading on this board, irregular beats are not unusual after ablations, perhaps it's the same with other heart surgeries, or anything making the heart irritable.
Hope some of this helps.
