My Afib was controlled for 7 years by first Toprol, then Atenolol. It has evolved to persistent and I have been on Norpace for the past 2 weeks. Some side effects and I am on a 30 day event monitor. I will try another drug if this doesn't work, but considering ablation.
I meant to also tell you, like Jerry said Tikosyn needs to be started in a hospital setting. My Dr at one time was going to put me on it when I was already in the hospital but my numbers weren't right to take it. Either my QRS or QT was too long or something. Anyway because of what he saw on my ECG he could not start me on it.
I feel for you. Have you had a-fib fo a long time? I had to try a string of anti-arrhythmic meds before I found the best one for me was Flecainide but you must have a structurally normal heart to go on it. It's in the same class as Rhythmol, which never worked as well for me.
I tried most all of them and then went with an ablation (PVI) last Sept. I do have to say finding the right anti-arrhythmic is the key but they pretty much all turn pro-arrhythmic eventually. If you have a history of a-fib you might consider an ablation. Toprol is a BB, not an anti-arrhythmic so it's help with a-fib may be minimal.
My doctor, cardiologist and EP, would require hospitalization for implementation of Tikosyn. That said, it is powerful stuff, and I'd guess worth a try.
I suffer from permanent AFib, but my symptoms are too mild and my condition too set for me to try Tikosyn, but if my doctor recommended trying it, I would.
Good luck.
