heart palpatations

For the past week, I've been experiencing a weird sensation with my heartbeat.  It usually happens at night when I am laying on the couch watching t.v.. My heart will be beating normally then all of a sudden it will beat hard one or two times then go back to normal. I'm not sure what it is called or why it is happening.  I do smoke cigarettes, and I'm sure that has something to do with it.  Is this something that can be treated?

Thank you...I did stop smoking..for 2 weeks now.  I am no longer having the palpatations & I am going to tell my doc about it at my next visit.

Stop smoking.

First you need to figure out what is causing the symptoms, that is usually done with a holter monitor or 24 hour rhythm monitor.  If it is premature beats from the upper or lower chamber (PAC or PVCs), there is not a great treatment for it.  You will find that they come and go over time with seemingly no explanation.  Probably best to see your doctor about the symptoms to determine if other tests are necessary.

Did I mention stop smoking?
