I appreciate your effort to share information. The article indicates that potassium level is a PREDICTOR of poor outcomes in HBV-related decompensated cirrhosis patients. It did not say that a high potassium level causes poor outcomes. It seems to me that a cirrhotic patient with a high potassium level indicates that cirrhosis is worst. Does eating bananas good or bad for you? The average banana, weighing 125g, contains 450mg of potassium, meaning a healthy person can consume at least seven-and-half bananas before reaching the recommended level.
Potassium levels being an indicator of poor outcomes by definition means exactly that higher potassium levels are associated with poor outcomes and hence predicts it. It demonstrates a strong associative relationship which I believe is difficult to ignore and is worth paying attention to. Making comparison regarding healthy people and RDA numbers is not helpful since chronic HBV patients are clearly different and should be treated as such. Most studies will never say anything conclusively since those claims cannot be made. However it will do us well to be aware of these facts as we navigate diet.
