this post is to suggest once again vitamin d supplementation to all us with liver disease since we have see the new studies at san francisco 2011
the most surprising study showed total cirrhosis prevention on human liver kimera mices.....then getting vit d for us is a must and also check serum levels of vit d and calcium, urine test is a cheap option to prevent overdose
do you think if Im experiencing bone loss or pain in the bones its related to lack of vitamin d in the body? im on tenofovir btw
of course it is but any person with hbv must take vitamin d3
blood tests every 3 months to make sure serum levels of vitamin 25oh>50ng/ml
Is there any any amount of vit d3 that becomes dangerous or harmful?
serum levels between 150-500ng/ml can increase calcium bsorption but there are few cases reported because you need to take millions iu of d3 for more than 6 months to have this plus you can check calcium in urine and even prevent the level to reach more than 100ng/ml
5000iu daily can make vitd25oh around 50ng/ml by 3-6months
10000iu can make it around 70ng/ml by 3 months
it is better to start with 10000iu daily and then check serum levels of d25oh and calcium monthly, once you reached the optimum serum levels you slowly decrease to about 5000iu and check if it can mantein blood levels
optimum levels are 50-70ng/ml, all studies are reported on this website

I've been intaking 5000IU Vitd3 softgels since 4 weeks but I've a serum calcium test scheduled for mid Dec..
Can i still go on or is there a possibility calcium will increase too much?
5000iu is nothing, you can go on with that dose even 3 months and see no difference in both vit d and calcium
calcium can increase over millions of iu for 6 months or more, calcium is also dangerous if elevated more than 15 for long times, if you like you can drin 2-2.5 liters of water daily this will lower calcium anyway
well, I got checked for Serum Calcium and in fact it stayed as it was before taking vit D3 5000iu daily.. I'm thinking on switching to 10000iu...
if vit d is still lower than 40ng/ml it is much better to use 10000iu daily and recheck calcium in 4 weeks and vit d in 2 months
