Problem

I just got diagnosed with hep C a couple days ago.   I kind of have an opiate problem and i just wanted to know how important it is to stop.   If i do pain killers  will it shut down my liver and kill me?

So sorry to hear what you are going through! The biggest thing is not to feel depressed that you have the virus. Everyone who doesn't have it seems to tell me that I am going to die! But I am the healthiest person I know even with it.

It is better to handle one problem at a time. Stop the drugs because your body is a stunning vessel and gift. Take care of it so you can live your life. Drugs only take away from what it can be.It is clutter, but it is easy to clean:)
I hope you don't use more b/c you get depressed about hearing about your condition.
There is hope.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. The opiates themselves aren’t likely to accelerate liver damage; unfortunately, you’re not likely to find a doctor that will treat you for the Hep C while you’re using.

Can you tell us more about your diagnosis? Do you know which tests were used?

The most important thing you can do for yourself right now is to avoid alcohol; this is proven to worsen liver disease.

Do you have follow up appointments with a doctor, or referrals to a specialist? These are important as well. If you’re using or drinking, doctors are reluctant to treat the disease for a number of reasons; primarily because people that are drinking/using tend to be less compliant with their orders, and unlikely to complete a course of therapy successfully. Plus, if you’re shooting dope, there’s a high likelihood that you’ll just become reinfected.

Don’t use alcohol, and do the follow up appointments with the doctors. Best of luck—

Bill

It is very important to stop.  You are only 17 and have your whole life ahead of you, think about it.
