Anybody have enlarged gall bladder?

Hi Compadres,

Went to the ER today with extreme pain under my liver.  Sonagram found no gallstones but doc said my gall bladder is enlarged and recommended a hiatascan -- apparently it shows how the GB is functioning.

Has anyone else experienced similar and would you suppose that HCV would predispose one to GB malfunctions?

I too had an ultrasound today.  They told me my gallbladder was enlarged and are going to do a test next to test the gallbladder's functioning.  I'm only 27 years old and have no other known health conditions.  How did yours turn out?  Did you have to have your gallbladder removed?

Thanks for your response.  Do you still have stones?

The pain came on in the middle of the night -- woke me up -- and I didn't eat anything particularly greasy for dinner.  The tests ruled out stones and cholestasis.  Doc said enlargement may be caused by GB not functioning/emptying correctly so hiatascan test tracks how the GB empties.  The good news is it's probably not a fasting test  :)

Keep well,

Interesting, never heard of an enlarged gallbladder, just gallstones and cholestasis. You're not confusing the gallbladder with the spleen? And yes I strongly believe that a long term HCV infection can cause gallbladder problems, amongst other things. Studies have tied HCV to gallstone formation, insulin resistance and diabetes, just to name a few. I myself was diagnosed with gallstones when I was only 31 (infected at 17), and they were fully formed so I had probably had them for years prior to that (no family history at all for them either). They caused me quite a bit of pain for awhile, they can be very painful for some people. They didn't find any stones or see one blocking your cystic duct? Did the pain come on after a meal, especially one with grease/fat in it? A fat laden meal can trigger gallbladder attacks.

Anyway, let us know what comes of it when you learn more, I'd be interested in hearing what you find out about this. Hope you get it straightened out in the meantime, good luck.
