For two years, I took Sam-E daily, along with Milk Thistle. I'm still taking Milk Thistle at 1000mg daily (Wal-Mart has the best price - Rexall brand). I've stopped the Sam-E about 9 months ago. It has made no difference in my ALT and AST. As a matter of fact, those readings are now better. Doesn't mean it's because I stopped the Sam-E, but at $40 per month over two years, the justification to continue was not there. I asked my Gastro about Sam-E. You can purchase this product from most retail pharmacies. Costco appears to be the cheapest. I have not used the product and I am not endorsing it: however, I have a vet that actually prescribes it for my epileptic dog because of all the liver damaging Phenobarbital that she's on. Once I found out that the product was available as "Mood Plus," I began purchasing it at a greatly reduced price. Interesting!

I started taking it about 2 months before I stopped tx. My Alt and Ast dropped over 20 after I was on it for 6 weeks. I have cirrhosis and am sticking with SAM-E.
i started using it for depression and it seemed to give me a bad headache. it is supposed to be good for liver support.. but it can cause some side effects. like headaches, stomach upset, etc.
i am going to try it again and if it causes headache again im done with it.... let us know how your father does...
Before I started treatment I used Sam-E for my joint and muscle pains but I had no noticeable difference so after 3 months I discountinued - It is not wise to use anything not prescribed while on Interferon
