Hep C Sovaldi, Ribavirin side effects

My sister is experiencing trouble with Mucus in back of throat and nothing seems to help such a Zyrtec and other decongestants.  First has anyone else experienced this and second what has worked.  She is doing well and finishes her 12 week tx for genotype 2 tomorrow 9/24/14.  All her labs are coming out normal.  Of course the final result 12 weeks post is yet to be seen. Just wanted to show some support.  I have recommended water with lemon.

I am on S/O + RIBA and have  this too, espessially at night  time. One night it is better, one worse. We shoul take it, and continue to go. Yes, let's drink a lot of water. I'd stay away from any med's. This is a new treatment and you never know about interaction . So, if you can tolerate it - don't take another pills except the hepc treatment.

Way late on the response but I experienced this a lot. I think being well hydrated help.

Thanks all who responded I just passed on your suggestions and may you all have SVR .  I document Hep C labs at the pharmacy I work at and have seen 90 % success rate.  And soon to be released newer and easier to manage meds to come out. I have learned a lot about Hepc and the treatment of since joining our team here.  Thrilling that the next drug is stating 99% success rate. Its been a few days since she completed tx and the nasal drip still keeping her up at night.  She sees her gastro Dr. Wednesday so hopefully he will calm her fears.

Hi there, I agree with Sandi, she could up her water intake and also run a humidifier.  I had to do that during tx. Post nasal drip is awful.
Sometimes I would take a hot shower to get more humidity.
I am happy your sister is done with tx.  Congratulations!

Hi and Congragulations to your sis for completing Tx.   I also experienced that nagging post nasal drip and took the same combo as your sister.  What really helped me was Claratin, but she should check with her Dr. before taking any meds prescription or non.
Good luck to her on achieving SVR.

My guess is she may not be drinking enough water. There is such a thing as Riba Cough (we call it around here), and it does go away after Tx. Zyrtec will make I worse I am guessing, because it will dehydrate her more. Water water water, even for months after Tx she needs to keep drinking. Best—Sandi

I am thinking that it's the Ribavirin.  I've been on many treatments with Ribavirin and this last one included, was the only one I was on with the Sovaldi.  On all of my treatments, except for one w/o Ribavirin.., I had this issue.  It's my opinion, but don't have the written literature of a scientific paper to back up my hypothesis...    There might be one out there though.

Am also gen 2 on sov/riba 12 week treatment with 17 days left to completion.
Haven't experienced mucus concerns but did experience a feeling of a cold developing in my lung area in the 8th week. Breathing deeply was difficult. This did not develop further and passed in a couple of days. The good news is that your sister will complete her treatment tomorrow. From that point forward the meds will proceed to work their way out of her system. Side effects from these meds seem to vary from person to person. Water and lemon is a great cleanser for the system. If your sisters mucus concerns continue to develop, it is prudent to check in with her doctor about this. Glad to hear your sister is otherwise been doing well.
