Hi
Chronic hepatitis - often autoimmune hepatitis is called chronic. The grade and stage refer to the damage in the liver. There are no doctors at this site. This is a patients forum. I would research Auto Immune Hepatitis. AIH is not contagious, it is caused by an overactive immune system. Just google that and you should get lots of information, also check www.liverfoundation.org
I have AIH so if I can answer any question, just ask.
Take care
Maari
sorry about your mother...
many of us have hep c for many years(me 37) and have no effects that show. i am married 32 years and my wife is ok.

It doesn't seem as if she died of hepatitis - but I suppose when they do an autopsy they include everything?
I am sorry for your loss. What a horrible time for you!
sorry for your loss. THere are no doctors in this forum, but we can guess that the autopsy refers to a chronic infection with hepatitis c, an illness that goes undiagnosed for a large majority. It can be transmitted to a child during pregnancy or labor, although this is rare. You could get tested for peace of mind. It does not look as if hepatitis contributed to her death, not at stage one.
oops, Maari, I am so glad you are here! I forgot that AIH would also be staged. We are so hep c focused sometimes. Thanks!
It is contagious, but fortunately is only a blood bourne disease.
The Grade is a measurement of liver inflamation, the Stage is the measurement of damage to the liver as a result of the disease. Both are generally measured from 0-4, 4 being the worse and meaning cirrhosis for the stage measurement.
Another important factor is the Type of Hepatitis and the Genotype withing that Type. Types run from A-E & G. Types A,B, and C most common in the USA and D,E, & G rarely seen in the States, but found in other countries along with A,B, and C.
