Well, I think this was an accute case. I am doing some research and the px was tested on Friday and told that he had high levels of ammonia in his liver. On Saturday afternoon, the px died.
Do you have cirrhosis?
Elevated serum ammonia in cirrhotics is a product of protein metabolism, I believe. You can probably expect the doctor to prescribe Lactulose; this is a non-absorbable sugar that will cause increased transit time (laxative) and can help reduce ammonia levels. They might also Rx Rifaximin, an antibiotic to help too.
Are you experiencing confusion or trouble with concentration? What prompted the doctor to order the test?
