on a positive note treating with interferon will give your liver a much needed break. even if you don't cure the HCV you could possibly regress the liver fibrosis. There have been cases where people with stage 4 (cirrhosis) regressed a stage back to a 3. Go for it before it is to late.
See Dr Ira Jacobson or Dr Detrich (sp?) in NYC.
Yeah, Bill is an iron man. But he's an example, and not the only one, that patients can face tough odds and come out the other side ok. As other posts suggests, with good medical advice and a strong committment things can work out for you. You have an advantage being in NYC, lots of good docs and lots of potential trials. But, you can't wait around waiting for the next bus to come along. Sooner, rather than later, you'll need to be a straphanger and hang on for the ride.
Thinking back. I'm pretty sure I might have contacted this virus in the late 70's. I had hep a. I'm wondering now if it was hep c back then. They just didn't know about hep c back then....
I'm in a large city. I in manhattan....Wondering am I the only one with such low platelets.Wonder why it hits some and not others. I do have thalasimia anemia, but it's minor, I don't think that is why my platelets are low. I'm sure it's the liver.....
I treated for a total of 152 weeks broken into two treatment sessions; and I’ll tell you what, treatment can get like a security blanket; so much so, that I was reluctant to stop even after all that time. Once undetectable, it’s unlikely the virus will reappear while the patient remains on the drugs… you can always start, and continue conditional upon response.
What part of the country do you live in? Are you near a large city?
Bill
When I asked him what happens when they drop to low he casually said we remove the spleen.....Don't know why I like this doc.
He did mention a procrit trial when I mention my concern about my platelets....
Wise words above, and I agree that the falling platelet numbers would be cause to be evaluated sooner rather than later.
If you need a reality check, my husband is a stark example of what cirrhosis can do: he had a liver cancer (and almost 1/2 his liver removed) in 2007 -- took him 6 months to completely heal from that surgery. Because of stage 4, he was told his chances were 25% of SVR if her were to treat, but surely to progress to more cancer or liver failure if he didn't. He too was terrified by the possible side effects, but even more scared of end stage liver failure. So he started treatment, surprised the docs and got to undetected by week 13. Cirrhosis is considered very hard to treat, but he surprised everyone, including himself. Because of what's at stake, he's done 99 weeks of interferon so far -- and this is a man who 3 years ago didn't think he could do it at all.
Important to know streamline, once you get to Stage 4, it gets exponentially harder to treat the longer you wait, and if you wait too long, you may not have the option to treat at all. Wishing you the best. ~eureka
He has trials he wants me in. It's me I wouldn't discuss treatment. I know I have to call, I cancelled my last appointment because I fell into such a bad depression and I didn't want to talk to him in that condition, but I'm feeling better now. Guess it's time.Geno 1a though, so it has to be the right trial... I'll have to see what he's offering....
If it were me, I’d be calling the doctor in the morning, telling him I wanted to start treatment yesterday; really. I treated for extended periods, and didn’t have a terrible experience; not great, but very much doable. Don't even consider viral load; if it's going to reduce, interferon will take it down in a hurry.
If you can gain access to a trial, fine; but I don’t think I’d wait for any time; you can always treat again if unsuccessful this go around—

I know Bill. Just keep reminding me please.....
Only other thing that's is abnormal of course if enzymes and of virus stays in the 1500000 range. I know it limits me. Have to have a good talk with my doctor. I've mentioned before that he wants me in trials. Just keep putting the talk off. I also mentioned before my last biopsy was F 3/4 bordering cirrhosis. That was Nov. of 09
Ooh, yeah; I just read through your profile. You really need to get up to speed, and most probably get treatment going, before you can no longer do it. You don’t mention how long ago your biopsy was; but with that knowledge, you’re very likely in early cirrhosis.
As FlGuy says, the outcome of treatment is an unknown; but end stage liver disease is well documented hell. This sounds like a no brainier to me; even if newer, more efficacious drugs were available, they’d still require both interferon and ribavirin at this point. Gotta get this going, streamline—

Going into treatment with low platelets can limit your options. Likely, they'll go lower and it's good to have some cushion in case treament drives them further. Unlike white and red cells, platelets can cause a hard stop. That's the limiting factor.
Maybe time to get a full up to date evaluation. Your profile says that you are scared of interferon and riba. There are things more scary. Good luck
It might be, in the absence of any other causes. Do you have other biochemical results such as serum albumin, bilirubin, INR, anything like that? When was your last biopsy, assuming you’ve had one?
