Medications for hepatitis C ?

I'm fabien from cameroon. It is a month today that the ministry of health announced publicly that hepatitis C can be eradicated completely with interferon within 12 months treatment and that the prices had been dropped down from 250 usd per week to 60 usd , I'm really lost because, this very interferon had never treated hepatitis C completely , but suddenly it cures completely in less than 72 weeks as usual even genotype 1 and 4. I was cured in 2009 by one research center (jefpadynatural) in my country , doctors told me that hepatitis c can never be eradicated completely , but i'm surprised that medications exist today , even medications that were unable to eradicate the virus are able now .
The funniest thing now is the prices , i spent 2500 usd in 2009 for a 6 months treatment , and i was cured completely. No one accepted till results proved that hepatitis can be eradicated totally , today the same song is sang with chronic hepatitis.  There's no cure , there is no cure ,   while people are cured .what a dirty politique

Help may be coming soon

Roughly 2% to 3% of the global population -- some 120 million to 170 million people -- is living with chronic hepatitis C and the vast majority of these people live in poverty-stricken nations with limited economic resources and healthcare access.

Hepatitis C is most prevalent in Central and East Asia and North Africa, but its particularly common in Africa, where the World Health Organization estimates 5.3% of the population is infected. In Egypt alone as many as 17% of the country's population has hepatitis C.

As a result, Egypt became the first country to negotiate a deal with Gilead for a low-cost supply of Sovaldi. In March, Gilead agreed to sell Egypt Sovaldi at a 99% discount to its U.S. price, or at a cost of roughly $900 for a 12-week treatment.

That's great news for millions of Egyptians and it may have set the stage for a wave of additional deals with other needy nations.

According to reports, Gilead is currently talking with a slate of generic manufacturers, including Mylan, about making and selling discount-priced Sovaldi in 80 markets including India, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

Fabien,  I'm sure this is very alarming to you.   It sounds like your government is trying to bring Hepatitis C treatment to your country.
Treatment is very much needed there.  Its just taking time to get it in your country at an affordable cost.  The interferon that you speak of costs a great deal more in the United States.  So it does look like your getting treatment at a reduction.   Its just not the latest and greatest thats being offered to Americans at a very high price.   I'm sure this process of getting treatment for everyone in your country isn't fast enough.  I'm sure I would feel exactly the same way if I was living there.

Best to you Brother

In the US Sovaldi is $1000.00 a pill so $84,000.00 for 12 weeks not including Ribavirin. Harvoni is $1125.00 or $94,500.00 for 12 weeks.

However I have read where Sovaldi is much lower in price in other countries. Harvoni was only approved October 10th in the US so it may not be available yet where you are. Harvoni is one pill a day, most have minimal side effects, and results are in the 90% success in eradicating the virus.

Good luck

The problem is that in my Country there are researchers that have been working very had for the cure of this 2 virus , hepa B and C but the Government can not encourage them , patients keep on dying due to lack of finance to affort   this interferon and  riba while there's a treatment for a very cheap price without any side effects  . They give treatment to patients resident in cameroon for 120 usd per month and treatment now is less than 6 months . But patients are not aware that there's a research center specialized in this diseases . I assure you that they even cure cirrhosis of the liver without cancer . I have witnessed it personally. Patients with a very advance cirrhosis stage f4 with stomach swelling were cured . Why can the Government not let their center known publicly so that they may collaborate with hematologist in hospitals ?. They pretend to work with them by giving them an authorization to carry out their researches and that's all . I'm very sure and certain that , if they were in the USA , American Government won't behave that way.

Hi there!  DWBH has given you excellent information.  Over the years there has been a lot of research and things have changed....for the better.  You are right interferon alone can not cure. I understand what you are saying.  I think it has a lot to do with research.
I am hoping that your country is not saying that interferon used alone can cure.  The old treatment of interferon and riba only cured 40%
The new treatments can be 12 or 24 weeks now and are curing  twice that.
the medical community is trying to get away from using interferon and there are new all orals.
Take Care

Hellow fabien and welcome.  I'm glad to hear that you treated and cured your hepatitis C.

What is the recommended treatment for hepatitis C?

The goal of HCV treatment is to cure the virus, which can be done with a combination of drugs. The specific meds used and the duration of treatment depend on a number of factors, including HCV genotype (genetic structure of the virus), viral load, past treatment experience, degree of liver damage, ability to tolerate the prescribed treatment, and whether the person is waiting for a liver transplant or is a transplant recipient.

There are a number of approved therapies to treat HCV, such as Harvoni (sofosbuvir/ledipasvir), Sovaldi (sofosbuvir) and Olysio (simeprevir). Sovaldi and Olysio may be prescribed together, or each may be separately combined with ribavirin and in some cases peginterferon as well. Although Victrelis (boceprevir) plus ribavirin and peginterferon is also approved, this regimen is associated with increased side effects and longer duration of treatment, and is therefore not considered a preferred regimen.

When hepatitis C treatment is working, the virus will become undetectable within four to 12 weeks and will remain that way throughout treatment. People are considered cured when they have achieved what is known as a sustained virologic response (SVR), or continuation of this undetectable status, 12 to 24 weeks after completing therapy.

Here are the recommendations for HCV treatment for all genotypes from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA). Note: In December 2014, the AASLD and IDSA will announce new recommendations regarding the use of Harvoni (sofosbuvir/ledipasvir):

AASLD HCV Treatment Recommendations
for treatment-naive patients who are eligible to receive interferon
Recommended Alternative
Genotype 1 Sovaldi + ribavirin + PEG* for 12 weeks Olysio for 12 weeks + ribavirin + PEG* for 24 weeks**
Genotype 2 Sovaldi + ribavirin for 12 weeks none
Genotype 3 Sovaldi + ribavirin for 24 weeks Sovaldi + ribavirin + PEG* for 12 weeks
Genotype 4 Sovaldi + ribavirin + PEG* for 12 weeks Olysio for 12 weeks + ribavirin + PEG* for 24–28 weeks
Genotype 5 or 6 Sovaldi + ribavirin + PEG* for 12 weeks ribavirin + PEG* for 48 weeks

AASLD HCV Treatment Recommendations
for treatment-naive patients who are NOT eligible to receive interferon
Recommended Alternative
Genotype 1 Sovaldi + Olysio +/- ribavirin for 12 weeks Sovaldi + ribavirin for 24 weeks***
Genotype 2 Sovaldi + ribavirin for 12 weeks none
Genotype 3 Sovaldi + ribavirin for 24 weeks none
Genotype 4 Sovaldi + ribavirin for 24 weeks none
Genotype 5 or 6 none none

* PEG = peginterferon
** For people with either HCV genotype 1b or HCV genotype 1a and in whom the Q80K polymorphism is not detected before treatment
*** Preliminary data suggest this regimen may be less effective than the recommended regimen, particularly among those with cirrhosis.

Does treatment work for African Americans?

Historically, HCV treatment has been less effective for African Americans than for Caucasians. This is partly-but not completely-explained by genetics: researchers identified a gene that is linked with response to pegylated interferon-based treatment, called IL-28B (see "How is it diagnosed, and what tests are used?" for more information on IL-28B). However, clinical trials of Sovaldi did not find any difference in cure rates between black and non-black study participants.

Does treatment work for Latinos?

Hepatitis C seems to progress more rapidly in Latinos than in people from other racial and ethnic groups. However, in the clinical trials of Sovaldi there was no apparent difference in success rates with the drug among Latinos than among non-Latinos.
