Transmission Questions - OCD and others

Hi everyone -

I know we've had a lot of OCD transmission questions lately, but please, instead of making sarcastic and insulting comments (which violate the Terms of Use), please just use the "Report" feature if you think we should check it out.

Also remember that some people have truly valid questions, and please give members the benefit of the doubt and respect you'd like when asking a question.

For those who are questioning if something they did put them at risk, please read this:  http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/Hepatitis/A-Guide-to-Understanding-Hepatitis-C-2006-/show/180?cid=64

Thanks,

Emily

The link states the following:

"HCV is transmitted by direct blood-to-blood contact. Transmission routes include sharing drug paraphernalia for both injection and non-injection drugs (needles, cookers, tourniquets, straws, pipes, etc.)."

No issue with the first statement; however, imho the second sentence unnecessarily gives rise to the already ocd inclined:  tourniquets and straws and pipes in non-injection settings shouldn't give cause for concern about transmission, but the statement is non-specific enough to still promote rather outlandish questions here.

I do my best not to be rude, Emily, but there are times when posters would be well-served to do a little research rather than taking up folk's time and patience with inane questions.  If they found their way here, they are certainly capable of using the "Search" function a bit... and then, of course, there are those people who just refuse to take "no" for an answer :).

Sort of appropos for an MH moderator to remind me to be more 'patient'. :)
Respectfully, ~eur

Myself i think its more trolls then people with OCD, what i don't understand is they can google to find this site, take the time to figure out how to join and then how to post, ask the same questions over and over but yet they can't seem to google picking "boogies" or flushing toilets and catching Hep-c.

There is at least one troll who shows up here with ridiculous OCD type questions, rephrasing them, and going on and on.
It does make it hard to know when someone really is just innocently ignorant and doesn't know how to do a search.

To everyone: I think once these are answered. Then the best course is to ignore any more posts from the person. If you don't feed into it, it will go away. However, like a bad mushroom, some keep popping up.

I believe that Medhelp is a highly respectable and informative organization, better then anyother and some of the answerers on this HCV forum have an excellent knowledge of the virus and excellent insight, far greater then most websites out there that may confuse people and create more anxiety.I would rather get my information from a person with extensive knowledge about HCV,than from some random posting on a website. You people are great.Welldone.

Does anyone know how they arrive at medhelp?
Simple; the more replies such questions get, the higher the ranking and the more likely the next goofy question will be directed to MH again.

Even rude, sarcastic and intentionally bad/dangerous advice will make the next such post be more likely to be sent here.  If you don't like 'em don't answer them since answering them is the action which causes more to be sent here.

FWIW..... I don't think people are intentionally doing this to be annoying.  I'd disagree that they are trolls.  They may be OCD, they may be incredibly uninformed, dumb, very young, foreign w/ poor english skills, or may be too lazy to research themselves.

OTOH, we don't always get it right, are rude, mocking, intentionally give bad advice, and insensitive.
I didn't know zip when I got DX'ed.  It ain't like we are all that and a bag of chips.  : )

If you are tired of these threads stop answering them.  : )
(but you *can't*, can you?   : )   )

One more idea: when that supposed OCD troll shows up, hit the abuse button. Medhelp helps!

And then they come back 2 hrs later with a new screen name

"and then, of course, there are those people who just refuse to take "no" for an answer :)"

Thanks eur for the quote

I think Willys has the right aproach.

There's the OCD, the troll and the OCD troll, with a fine line between them.  When I first started visiting this forum I thought most of the rediculous questions were from trolls and I could easily recognize their posts.  I was wrong.  I never realized how many OCD's asking bizarre questions existed.  I try to be more tolerant, answer some, ignore most, but can't resist a little humor if not directed at the OP.   It's easy to say ignore it or report it, but easier said than done.

It was a full moon on 11/10 and yesterday was 11/11/11, so maybe this is bringing them out of the woods? :-)

When people post you can get infected via "blood gases" I can't help myself.  It's one thing to ask questions because you don't know, or have other issues. But when people put out misinformation about HCV I have to object.

Awhile back someone asked if you could get HepC by drinking blood.  Now, c'mon.  That was perhaps the most hilarious thread that I ever became involved in.  I don't think any of us thought the poster was actually serious and it was hard to take that question seriously.  I thought it was a joke and treated it accordingly.   I don't think we were putting the poster down by cutting up a bit over it.  After all,  we are all treating, waiting to treat, on edge and often feeling dreary.  Everyone needs a pick me up once in awhile.  That thread was so invigorating because it was so funny.  And we need that once in awhile.  The responses were directed at the post and not the poster.  Big difference in whether it is determined to be insulting or merely responding to the content.

Also, I noticed you acted fairly promptly in taking a clearly offensive post with sexual content from the Medhelp suggestions page this aft.  Thank you.

I find it interesting that medhelp finds these threads and reprimands the unpaid help instead of contacting the people who start these threads and directing them to an OCD forum (is there one). Maybe the the trolls are hitting the report button. That would be kind of funny.

I also believe we are quite compassionate with what appear to be real questions from someone who is truly fearful. Although we can never be sure the the trolls/OCD people seem pretty obvious. I feel for people with OCD, it must be very difficult to live life in fear, but I don't think the people with hcv/hiv need to be their therapists.
