Treatment

Hi, I am asking this for a friend who I believe has been given a lot of false information. or at least information from 10 years ago.
He lives in Maryland is on the State Medicaid.  He has asked his doctor if he could treat and has been told they will not pay.  I think it is called Physicians Care.  I see where they would pay for interferon but he is ineligible for that so I thought his doctor could tell the ins that and he could get help.
He has had acites for two years and has had it drained.  Two years ago he was told by an inexperienced nurse that he needed a transplant.
I told him he needed to go to a hospital that had a transplant team so that they could decide if he could stand the new treatment or should he be listed for a transplant first.
He has been told that he has to get rid of the HCV before the transplant.  I know that is no longer true.  A friend of mine has just gotten a liver transplant in Baltimore MD.  She will still need to treat the HCV after she recovers. She has better insurance than he does.  He is married, has 4 children and a grandchild.

I realize that I can't do anything for him that he won't do for himself.  I was hoping that perhaps I could find information to share with him to help him understand he is going to die without doing something.  I now see that he is retaining even more fluid in his face.  He won't take the lactulose and he sleeps most days.  His wife is at a loss as to what to do.  She knows he is going to die without help.  His children have tried to talk to him but he has all this misinformation in his head.  Maybe he has just given up.  I really don't now.  Again, just looking for information.
I told him about Greg Jeffries, got the forms necessary to get the medication from India.

Should I butt out or keep trying?  I am very torn, he is my husbands  best friend from child hood friend and he asked me if I would ask for help here.

Hey there! My friend took the forms to his doctor, he was not aware of this information.  My friend also has a hepatologist now.
I wanted to come back and thank you very much,

Dee

Thank you very much, I will tell him this.  It is such a coincidence that I sent that question.  My friend has an appt today. Not sure if it is a hepatologist cause he is so stubborn and so 10 years behind which I think his doctor is as well.

I just found this great information about the FEDS telling Medicaid to stop restricting treatment for HCV

Dee, if you call Help4Hep and ask for Robin, she is on the Maryland Hep C Coalition and she may be able to help you help your friend. Unfortunately she will not be available until this coming Friday as she is out of town.

Hey there, I went to the link you provided and there it was listed under preferred tx for the State of MD plus Sovaldi but he would have to do the interferon.  He is ineligible for interferon as he tried it before.
I have talked to his wife and told him about this.  I pray they are going to try to fight this doctor or find another one who is more knowledgeable.
They have an appt Wednesday.

I wanted to thank you so much for your help.  I fear he will die if he does not get appropriate care.  Luckily he has no varices.  Lots of edema.  I believe he has HE as well but he won't take the lactulose.  His wife even took it to show him it would not give him the runs 24 hours a day.  They did that to him in the hospital. ugh

I would say he is an old stubbor n cuss of a man but he is only 2 years older than I am so I won't say that.

If you don't mind I will keep in touch with you, that is if they actually do something :)
Lots of Love
Dee
