Work at my job during Treatment

Hello Community.  I will be starting my first Triple Therapy on Friday, 11/4/11 and I am sooo worried about this crap, after reading everyone's post.  If you have time, let me if "most" people can work at their jobs most of the time on the Incivik, Pegasys & Ribavirin through the entire treatment.  I am totally worried about this, as my Dr. only says it's different from person to person.  (of course) but for the most part can patients survive a job and treatment?

Any input will help, thank you so much everyone....JayFo

Hi Jay, welcome!  The pre-tx anxiety is the worst.  After that, you will just roll with the punches and go about your daily duties.  I had the same concerns as you, as I need to work throughout treatment (I'm on Victrelis).  My doc does not give disability for this, as they feel that if one is not strong enough, they will have to stop tx.  That said, I have been working most days and only taking off when I really felt I couldn't.  Tonight will begins my 10th week, and sides have been tolerable, with the exception of the Anemia, simply because I had no control over that.

Since you have a little one, you may want to have more back up, especially if there are times when you are drained or just need to focus on you and get more rest.  Work when you can.  It if becomes too much for you, let your doc know before it gets to that point so they can help.  Best to you as you begin your journey today.  It is different from person to person, from day to day.

i'm at week 4 and like everyone else on here, i wasnt sure how i would react to the triple therapy. the first 48hrs for me were the worst. the sides so far are tolerable but change hour to hour. i'm mostly tired and somedays i nap for hours.

i have a physically demanding job that requires me to be at work 12+ hrs somedays. if i show up to work, i'm expected to perform. i can't take breaks, go home early, or call out if i don't feel well, so i filed for disability.
i hope when i finish incivek at week 12 my situation will improve and can back to work. if not no big deal.

my advice would be to have a plan if you can't work and go up from there... work part-time, flexible work schedule, work from home if possible, ect...
hey you never know,  you might feel fine on tx.
hope this helps you and good luck.

I am in week 13, and my experience so far has been the anxiety and fear I had prior to starting treatment has been far worse than my actual side effects.

It hasnt been a cakewalk, but it has been tolerable. The itching is my worst side effect for sure.

I do building inspections. I requested to only do indoor inspections during the course of my treatment- this has worked so far.

I have seen articles that say the majority continue to work although some reduce their schedule or work from home, and some do need to stop.  I have never been able to find any stats.  To prepare, I read up on my companies disability, leave, and fmla rules, just in case.  Loss of my job would be devastating to my family and those programs only protect or compensate you so far.  Just filing can in some cases bring repercussions from what I have read, although it's not supposed to.

So far I am on week 11.  Two days off for the doc, 2 days because I just felt I needed to, one week vacation because I had time, and two work from homes.  Every day is a struggle to get moving but it's good for me to get to work and be moving, so far.  I would do better if my work week was 3 or 4 days instead of 5 but am getting by.  My doctor thinks I am doing well, not really sure how I compare.  People at work don't see it even though I feel it daily.  I have a desk job.

Aw, thanks so much!  We do what we must do, yes?  Interestingly, I did not usually notice my own physical discomforts when I was ministering to someone else, though sometimes I was more tired than usual afterwards.  I'm sure that you will find a way to adjust as you move forward.  Please do stay in touch.

Thank you.  Yes, I am fortunate in some areas in age, support, but not with the job.  I'm an office manager to a Construction Company, the only woman in the office = FRUSTRATING, already.  It's getting up a 5:30 to get myself & 6 yr daughter ready & to school by 7:30 + work by 8...rushing around is not going to easy + treatment.   I will keep you posted of the routine, but with the holidays coming, this maybe a perfect for a little downtime, without asking for time off.

Thanks again for listening.  Jay fo

Welcome to the forum.  I can only tell you my own experience, but maybe that will help.  I took the triple tx with Incivek and was happy to only have to do tx for 24 wks instead of 48.  I'm a bit older than you (was 55 at time of tx) and I do think age matters when it comes to tx.  I believe it's a little harder when one is older, since the body is not quite as resilient.  Other health problems also figure in, but I was relatively healthy when I began tx.

I am self-employed but my work is very physical and I work one-on-one with people (massage therapy) so I really have to be at my best.  There were times when I did not feel great but I was able to do my work.  For a short period of time I did reduce my hours somewhat but I think I could have worked full hours if it had been absolutely necessary.  The hardest side effect for me was the anemia.  When it was at its worst, I absolutely needed to rest more.  But I was in a trial and the only remedy allowed for my anemia was cutting the dose of the Ribavirin, which takes a while to really have an effect on hemoglobin level.

If you've already made the decision to start tx, just try not to worry so much.  Easier said than done, I know!  But no one really knows how it will be for you, just like your doc said, it is different from person to person.  Just hang in there, keep bringing your questions, and think positive.  It was a really good feeling for me to finally "do" something about my Hep C, and getting cleared of the virus is a huge relief.

Good luck to you,
Lapis
