genotype 1a

I just got the news I have genotype 1a. I am so lost and scared. What does this mean? All they did was leave a message on my phone. I have read that type 1 is least responsive to the meds, but what do they mean by 1A?

Hello,I am genotype 1A, and was diagnosed at the age of 15. I am now 25 wth two beautiful boys, 8yrs and 18 months. I am to receive my meds tomorrow, and am really freaked out. I dont have much of a support group, and take care of the baby during the day while daddy's at work, does anyone have any advice, like what are the best foods to take the ribavarin with and best insomnia meds, because I already am anxious and cant sleep. im scared, and hope this forum will help me. thanks in advance!!

I agree with the above comments.  Try not to worry.  This virus can be treated.  There is currently about a 40-50% chance of success for geno 1's.  I believe that it will soon approach 75% for many genotype 1's.  The approval of new drugs might come in 2011.

If your damage is minimal you may very well be able to wait.  Many of us have had HCV for decades with minimal damage.  You need to get tested, probably with a biopsy to see where you stand.  I presume that your doctor will order a biopsy.  You might get your results soon afterward.

Try not to worry; not easy I know.  I may have had the virus since the mid 70's and am a stage 1.  DO get some testing since the damage may occur quite differently from person to person.

best,
Willy

Bad news, but there is hope. Worth trying treatment to see how you respond, it worked for me (I was 1A), I hope it does for you.

Good advice about the biopsy. It alleviated my fears because mine came back with little to no damage, and I had the virus close to or over 20 yrs. If yours comes back with such numbers, you have a choice, and will hopefully come to terms with being hcv positive ( I did ) and be able to live your life without so much stress. We all felt the same way you do when we first found out. It's normal! But staying that way will not be a good thing. Good luck.

There's a matter of genetics underlying the genotypes.  You can have a less responsive genotype like 1a or 1b, but you may be lucky enough to be one of the small group who are very responsive to interferon and clear easily.  You just have to get into the treatment and see what happens, since there are not yet any DNA screening tests for interferon response.  Look up a website called Janis & Freinds.  It has just about everything about hepatitis C that you'd ever want to know.

It's normal to be very anxious when you are first diagnosed with this potentially deadly disease.  It gets better as you learn more about tthe disease and the treatment for it.

yes you have come to a good place, I also was scared and confused and thank God for this forum, I actually learned everything here and not from the docs (which is sad). I am geno 1b and am undetectable. Welcome and ask ask ask, someone will respond. I wish doctors would be a little more specific when telling people what is going on, it's like they throw this news on you and throw you out to the dogs.Try to learn as much as you can about this hcv and meds, this is some serious stuff (at least it was for me) had I not of found this place, God knows what would of happened.

It is hard to take on board at first, but try to keep calm.  This is bad news but not the end of the world.  1A is one of the subtypes of genotype 1 (there is also 1B)

Although treatment of g1 has a lower success rate than other genotypes, 1 is the most common genotype in North America, and many, many people have treated it successfully.  I had genotype 1A and I cleared the virus.

Before you make treatment decisions you should have a biopsy to find out how much liver damage you have, if any.  That information will help you decide if you should treat now or if you can wait for better drugs that will shorten the time you must treat.

Read as much as you can and come back here with your questions.  We will help you.  You have come to a good place.
