DNA & Hep C

Has anyone had their DNA tested before tx. I'm waiting for a call from a DR. friend that says DNA testing can tell if these drugs will work or not. I'm going to look into it further.

Bill is right, it is the the Interleukin-28B genotype. I have been curious about this as well. I wonder if it is a costly test or if the lab values or questionable, or what. I mean there has to be a reason it is not used as a predictive tool more often. I notice a few members on the forum seem know their complete genotype but that is about it. I couldn't open the above LabCorp link so I will Google it after I post.

Here is a cut and past from part of the article :

The IL28B genotype test can be used to predict response to peg-IFN and RBV in HCV genotype 1 patients. The test result indicates whether the patient has an IL28B CC, CT, or TT genotype. Patients who have the IL28B CC genotype are more likely to have a SVR with peg-IFN and RBV treatment, whereas patients who have the TT genotype are more likely to be nonresponders. This information can help clinicians and patients make informed decisions on how to best manage their HCV infection.

I just noticed that it mentions how Genotype 1a patients will respond to peg-IFN and RBV treatment. Prodrugs and PI's are not mentioned so I don't know if the extent that makes a difference if any.

Either way, I am thinking I would like to know if I am an IL28B CC, CT, or TT genotype ~ especially if I do not clear the virus this time around. That means I will have been a 2-time partial responder. If that turns out to be the case I am seriously going to have to learn more than I already do about HCV as it pertains to me and my chances of recovery.

I think I might ask on my next appointment since my GI participates in lots of trials and research.

My apologies; I seem to have given you a dead link above. Take a look at this page; it’s probably similar to what the doctor had in mind...

I wouldn't know until I speak to her. I really don't know anything about it yet.

Could you be referring to the IL28b genetic polymorphism test?
