High AST(SGOT) Normal ALT(SGPT)

I'm 23 years old. I've been feeling discomfort under my left ribcage which I suspect is my liver. This has been going on for 5 years on and off. I've had a roller coaster of a life and I'm currently trying to piece it all together. Now I just got a blood test with the results saying:

ALT (SGPT), 19, 0-40, which is within the normal range, but
AST (SGOT), 52, 0-37, which is high...

So I've done a bit of reading. From what I gather, it means there may be a disruption in my body elsewhere besides the liver and the liver is reacting to it? I'm not sure where I read that but help me out here. I've been to the doctors a few times and he seems to be of no help. Last visit to him was 2 years ago and it came out high before. Now I want to do something about it myself.

well, then tell your doc you want to treat.  Going through the Interferon and Riba is not

easy but it can be done.  say a prayer, grit your teeth and go for it.

remember what winston churchill said, 'when you are going through hell, keep going.'

Yes I tested positive, My biopsy last Nov.09 was F3/4. Which was bridging cirrhosis. I really thought if I changed all my bad habits to good ones I might be able to beat this thing. I haven't improved over the last two years. My platelets keep dropping which isn't a good sign and my last cat scan showed possible early cirrhosis. My quality of life has changed drastically over the last two years as well. I'm scared to death about treating and never thought I would, but going on like this is just not what I want.

Hep C... I've been refusing treatment for two years. I think he finally has my attention. I'll be discussing trials with him at the end of the month.

I wouldn't say my spleen is hard. It just hurts once in awhile, like internal pain that I can't really describe. My ALT is normal, AST is infalted. I don't know if it has anything to do with the liver since it's not even on the right side...

What does he wants to treat you for?  nothing too serious, I hope.

Good information. I have pain this time when my doctor pressed on my left side. My spleen is enlarged, but that was the first time I experienced pain. Maybe he pressed harder because he wants me into treatment :(

Your liver is on the right sight and spleen is on the left.

When you are in the doctors office and he presses on the right side of your stomach,

he is checking your liver and when he presses on your left side, he is checking your

spleen.  You should be able to press in on your left and right side and not feel any pain.

A healthy liver and spleen are  soft and flexible, like a partially inflated football.

A 'hard' liver or spleen means there is something going on and should be investigated.

but like the other posters said your alt/ast are only marginally elevated.  so i would not

worry but tell your doctor.

Yah, you should find a doctor who will check it out bro. I'm not a physician, so I really can't say what those numbers might mean. Looks like your blood work is slightly off.

Interesting.. I'm not sure if it's the spleen or the pancreas. I'm feeling it under the bottom of my left ribcage which looks lower than the spleen. Another few notable things that came back are:

RBC, 4.32 Low, 4.50-5.50 M/uL
MCV 98.4 High, 79-98 fL
MPV 12.1 High, 7.2-10.5 fL

Absolute Monocytes 0.6 High, 0.1-0.6 K/uL

Now I don't know what all these mean exactly but I'm reading about them because I don't feel the doc is doing his job or doesn't feel my pain when I say something is off. I don't know if I can find something here but it's worth a shot right?

It's not normally tested. They sometimes check it if they suspect a heart attack (muscle damage again).

I only asked to have mine tested to help my doc figure out what was going on. If you have recently exercised hard, and I mean really hard and you're stiff and sore, it's worth checking out.

What do you test for CPK? I don't see it under liver on my blood test. I do workout just about every day but not heavy enough to hurt myself. I also have high Testosterone 1040, range 240-950. And high Prolactin 19.77, range 4-15.20 ng/ml which is giving me ED (I've posted there too). Just seeing if there's some sort of correlation someone can put together. I don't take supplements except for multi-vitamins and protein.

Hmm, from looking at this:

It seems it might be the spleen. Not sure though.

If ya don't mind me asking, what's under the ribcage on your left side? Is there something there?

Forgot to mention, AST is present in other organs besides the liver... My AST went through the roof after a heavy workout after laying off the gym for the better part of a year. When my muscles healed, the enzymes returned to normal. The key in this situation is to also check for a marker called CPK - which is present with the elevated enzymes when muscle injury is present.

Do you exercise heavily? Athletes commonly have slightly elevated levels for the reason mentioned.

Your liver is on the right side of your body, under the rib cage, not the left side.

AST can be elevated by... almost anything. And your enzymes are very, very marginally elevated. I would find a doctor who will investigate why it is high. For a physician to simply disregard it seems rather strange, especially at your young age.

I wouldn't freak out on it, but, I would get to the bottom of it.

Good luck
