If you find an alternative to raise your HGB please let me know, I'll try any thing at this point. My wife gets a B-12 shot every week and said she feels great, she's been doing that for years.  Talk to you later.

yes, I know the procrit ups the red blood cells and the b-12 shots are great. The meds I mentioned before were the ones listed on the paper sent to me.  I guess I will find out what other meds they will use.  He did say procrit and B-12 shots.  My daughter called tonight and said the Dr. called her because she was concerned about the anemia.  He said he has cured many with Thalassemia.  Will let you know what they say Friday night after I see all the Drs.  I do feel I'm in good hands,he did say some of the ones he cured were geno 1B on meds for 48 weeks and he was able to keep their blood count upeven though they had Thalassemia.  I am really nerves about this, but I know it has to be done. Maybe there are other meds I don't know about that they use. Will let you know what they are.

Have a Happy New Year and I pray 2006 will be a great year for all of us.

Hi

yes, procrit is so called erythropoietin - often refered to as epotein. Erythropoietin stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells (if there is a epotein shortage). Nupogen is for the white cells. Not as common that we need that. So Your doc is talking about these two drugs.

Well this is my quest to search for alternative methods to maintain the hgb level. Only other thing I find recomended is Vit C, E and B12. (and light exersise) speak soon

Hi,

Well, the Dr. mentioned procrit but there are other meds he can give.   The three drugs he said were: procrit, epogen and neupgen so we'll see what he will use on me.  I think he is waiting for my last blood test to come back to decided what's best.  will keep you all informed as to what is going on.

Hope you all had a great Holiday and wishing you all a great New Year.

Hi Beagle

Good to hear from you. I have started week 6 now, and so good so far. I did take a dive all of sudden, went from 12,5 down to 9,1 in one week, but my body seems to be adjusting remarkebly. I was really worried until I saw that goofydad and duch boy are holding out on 6,5. As I have said many times, my bloodspecialist belives that procrit wont help in thalassemia situations, so there for I was so excited to know if there is anything else that can be done. So your doc starts you on procrit at the same time as the treatment. Interesting. This is what I asked for but was dismissed! Did he mention what else he had up his sleeve? JMJM told me he had a b12 shoot and inproved after that, but he did state that that might have been coincident. Im at least going to ask for b12. (cant hurt)

So apart from looking like a alien, I think Im doing fine. Let me know how it will all pan out. all the best

just got home from dinner, raining in NY area.  I saw your post.
I would be scared to no end about taking the riba when anemia is already present. I got to give you a lot of credit. What was your level of liver damage again?  There is so many that start tx with a few negatives on their side and still meet the challenge head on.
I hope all goes well next week
