Thank you again...sigh....loving it and almost on overdose.  Think I need to watch a good dark drama to come down a little... :)

Gabriela's handwork is amazing.  And right after that video stopped, I noticed their interpretation of Stairway to Heaven - had to hear it.  Loved it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNc5o9TU0t0&NR=1&feature=fvwp

Then watched them play one of my fave tunes among many...Wish You Were Here.

Thanks for the link to order.  My short term memory is terrible so I have to do it while I'm thinking of it and ordered it right away - along with a book I'd been meaning to order and keep forgetting.  So double thanks. I am excited to get it - CD with DVD - and allows me to both watch and listen.  Terrific.

I think you have just moved Cuba and Havana up on my bucket list.  Still going to take awhile...there is a bit of prep I wanted to do before going...nameless. :)

Cheers....and thank you.

Trish

Los Van Van is one of greatest bands ever. Live they tear it up.
The CD to get is Los Van Van Live at Miami Arena (2003).
Here is the link to buy on Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/Van-Live-Miami-Arena-Dvd/dp/B0000CG8C4
One of the best live shows ever IMHO. The CD includes two CDs and a DVD of the concert. Not to be missed.

Here is Mayito singing "TEMBA TUMBA Y TIMBA" at the show.
Los Van Van is on fire! If this doesn't get you moving you must be dead! Play it LOUD! ;-)

Buena Vista Social Club was a great band. Unfortunately I only got to visit many of the musicians in there resting place in Cementerio Cristóbal Colón. 57 acres of marble Jesus, angels, flower statues and the resting place of all of Cuba's heroes, musicians, poets, writers, dictators (except Batista), baseball players, war heroes, Hemingway dogs etc etc. The largest cemetery in Latin America. If you like history Havana is like a living museum. Spanish cobble stone streets and music everywhere. If someone has a boom box there will be a crowd in no time with everyone from 5 to 90 years old dancing. Amazing culture.

Alex Cuba, Solo tu (Only You) very pretty. I love Latin melodies and love lyrics. So emotional.

Cheers!
Ciao.

I am very lucky for sure around here.  There is and always has been a wealth of good music at local venues and not far to go to see bigger names, if I was inclined to pay the bigger ticket prices which I'm not.  I did see Shawn (still think it should be SEAN :)  recently for a measly $5 cover charge - I knew he was coming and prompted me to post that video as he does play around the U.S. also and wanted to share him. :)  He did not disappoint ... and at $5 cover?  Amazing.  That is very hard to beat, for sure.

This summer, I have our annual free folk festival that has a heavy Celtic influence along with other world musicians  and I will get to wander around the various outdoor stages and take in utterly talented musicians for free.  Along with the lovely Celtic stuff that connects me with my heritage, I've seen a Cuban band, Japanese drumming group and last year a fellow doing American folk music which was really good..and fun - just to name a few. Then there is our free outdoor blues festival that gets bigger and better every year, this year the headliners are names easily recognized by anyone...and it's all free.  Aside from that, there is so much going on around here, that I cannot keep up with it all and I could be out every weekend and many weeknights seeing someone somewhere.

I do live without TV  - although watch my a handful of my faves on the Internet. :)  But no...could not live without music.  Great quote.

Cheers. :)

No worries, Hector...could be from reading it without that first coffee this morning. :)  Second read is funnier.  Don't discount the benefit of icicles though...and from what I understand and the pictures I've seen, you have the best of all worlds there in NoCal - not far to go to kayak or enjoy the snow in either direction and I've been suitably impressed AND jealous!

Loving the links so far, working my way through them. Celtic music makes me move and so does Cuban music / Latin music.  Los Van Van I enjoyed SO much...going to see if I can find them on DVD...I have Buena Vista Social Club (hope that doesn't make you groan cause I like it) on CD and DVD.  Thank you for Unicorno...lovely...poignant.. AND sad, particularly set against that video.  One of my silly little items on my bucket list is to go to Cuba, stay at a casa particulare and visit Havana.  One of these days, maybe.

This fellow...born in Cuba and now Canadian...will be in my area soon and I plan to go - Alex Cuba - more of a fusion artist it seems since coming to Canada, I think with his goal of bringing Cuban music into the mainstream.  See what you think - to me, this is beautiful, makes me wish I understood him:

Trish, I was pulling your leg so to speak. I guess something got lost in translation...I wasn't criticizing. I was trying to be funny. Oops I guess I bombed. :-(

Sorry about the "wannabees" reference. That's me on my high horse. Mr. know-it-all.

"I truly enjoy watching"... "what I see when he performs" Are we talking about music or somethang else. ha ha

Music is subjective. Sure I can "prove" that one musician is better then another technically, musically. But if someone digs Justin Bieber who am I to say they shouldn't enjoy it. At least they are enjoying some music. When I was in my early teens, many centuries ago, I liked "Bubble Gum" "Teeny Bopper" music. Like "Wooly Bully, "Love Potion #9" and Baby Love". Wasn't "I Want to Hold Your Hand" for 12 year old girls to scream to.

I agree it is get to see live music in a small venue. That is the way it is meant to be heard. The prices they are changing to tickets at the big venues is INSANE. I'm not gonna spend over $100 to see god never mind a mere mortal. I think my Woodstock tickets were $6 per day for 3 days. I don't think I ever have paid over $30 to see anyone and I have seen all the greats during the 60s, 70s and 80s and contemporary artists too.

"What's important...is how it makes you feel."
That is what is it all about!!!

Here is some eclectic music I love...

And now for something pretty for the ladies...

This is for the guys - Cute as can be and is a fantastic musician.
Esperanza Spalding Overjoyed at the White House

Unicorno by Silvio Rodriguez A Cuban classic song. So pretty and so sad...with video of contemporary Havana
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg6Ucj5d4HQ

English lyrics-
My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday.
I left it grazing and it disappeared.
Any information, I will pay for it well.
The flowers that it left behind don't want to talk to me.

My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
I don't know if it left me, or if it got lost,
and I don't have but one blue unicorn.
If anyone's got any news, I beg to hear them.
A hundred thousand or a million, I will pay.
My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
it went away.

My unicorn and I became friends,
a little bit with love, a little bit with truth.
With its indigo horn it was fishing for a song
knowing how to share it was its calling.

My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
and it may seem perhaps like an obsession
but I don't have but one blue unicorn
and even if I had two I only wanted that one.
Any information, I will pay for it,
My blue unicorn, I lost it yesterday,
it went away.

Better stop before I offend everyone....

Cheers!

You are lucky to live near any music scene - truly.  My little town occasionally hosts someone worth seeing through our folkart society.  Outside of that it's an overnighter and at this point way too costly.

I thought that Sean Kellerman, in your original link, actually pulled off Voodoo Child better than most who try it - and they all seem to try it.

I could live without tv but not without music!

Right...you have Jerry Brown now.  About time.  Hope that works out.  Comment was a jibe at the...ah...educational ...PSA being an Ahnold outcome and not all that serious either.  No offense intended to NoCal men....just like none taken on the deodorant question...just friendly bantering.

As for the rest of it.....I posted that link to share a bit of guitar playing from a guy I truly enjoy watching.  I'll repeat....ain't no competition and I never put him up there as the equivalent of Hendrix or any other great...and not as any kind of epitome of a sex symbol.  Sex on guitar ... well, that's just the pure pleasure of experiencing someone who plays the guitar with a particular kind of passion and the comment wasn't related to that clip so much as to what I see when he performs.

My budget just isn't going to allow me to go see a Prince or the like on a weekly basis.  So the fact that I can plunk down a modest cover charge or ticket price, get a f*cking awesome night of music and see them up close and personal and *feel* the music and not pay through the nose for a beverage.....well that has some value to me.  So...just wanted to share a bit of someone I enjoy.  One of my life's little pleasures is watching who's playing on "the circuit" and getting out to catch my faves or some new sound when I can.  I guess you can call them "wannabes" - I don't think that's fair to these musicians.  I'm appreciative that they have a talent and they put it out there.

Everybody has their favourites from local musicians right on up to the greats.  What's important, as someone said to me, is how it makes you feel.

Great links, Hector. Keep 'em coming.

"Seriously if you haven't heard this check out his solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".
Solo starts at 3:28. Love way he throws he guitar away at the end. "I'm outta here!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifp_SVrlurY&feature=related "

Oh yeah!  I remember in interviews w/ multiple artists the question was posed "what do you do when you want new music?"  All the musicians were referring to listening to other musicians except Prince.  Prince said "If I want new music I'll make it myself."  You know, he's a scrawny one but because of his playing and attitude he is, well I'll use his words, "a sexy motherfocker."  I'd be willing to relinquish a safe word w/ this one!

Now I gotta go check out your other links.  I love waking up w/ a good cup of coffee and some great guitar links.  Thanks.

News Flash! Arnold Schwarzenegger is not our Governator. He has been terminated.
Jerry Brown is our new Governor.

Ladies, as far as fantasies, more power to ya. Just let us know the safe word BEFORE you start to play.

"NoCal boys....don't you know nuthin??"
What??? Where U been? In a cave? WE KNOW ALL! Haven't ya heard? We invented sex, guitars and granola. What more do you ladies want? Jeez...never satisfied...
P.S. We don't have icicles here and don't want 'em.

'Sex on a guitar"? Sounds uncomfortable, especially the head stock, ouch... but I guess it could be worked into a hard sex scene somehow? Any ideas are welcome.

Best guitarist? Sofia Vergara. Yeah..details...details. So she doesn't play, but does any guy really care? That is a big NO.

Okay I'll be nice for a second and share:

Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child 1968. Nobody had ever heard a guitar sound anything like this before (listen to Clapton's little sounding wah wah guitar or any other guitarist in 1968) and it is been imitated but never surpassed in the last 43 years. The real deal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoAXW30mMAg

IMHO this cat can play more in 4 bars then all the notes ever played by all the wannabes. He channels Hendrix too.
