Jim is right.

From my own experience...If your hubby's cousin undergoes tx for HCV his Derm will need to watch his psorasis as treatment is known to cause it to flare up and more importantly spread to new areas of the body!!! As you know, once it spreads, it usually will stay there for good! Not a pleasant side effect of tx! So close monitoring is very important.

Before tx he should get his psorasis under control as much as possible and continue to treat his skin condition throughout tx.

Best of luck.

Most promising trial at present appears to be the Telaprevir trials although some newer agents/better agents may soon emerge.

Unfortunately, all current trials (and treatments) I'm aware of use interferon and interferon and psoriasis don't mix very well. For that reason, if your hubby's cousin does decide to treat (watch and wait can be a reasonable option) it's important that everything is cleared/coordinated with a dermatologist who is somewhat familiar with the effects of interferon on psoriasis. I had very minor psoriasis that required only the most infrequent and minimal treatment prior to treatment, but ended up with a very serious mix of several different types of psoriasis once on treatment that were difficult to manage even with topicals and an agressive program of UVB light and laser treatments.

Yep, you got that right.  The Hoffman LaRoche trial of R1626, polymerase inhibitor. A group of us here in that trial at the moment.

I also remembered the trial for R1626?     I hope I'm saying that right.  I think that's the trial that Trish is in?  Maybe she'll click on here and correct me.

The current Standard of Care for HCV includes:

1) Pegasys (interferon alpha 2a) by Roche pharmaceuticals

2) PEG-Intron (interferon alpha 2b) by Schering-Plough

3) Infergen (consensus interferon) by Valeant pharmaceuticals

However, Infergen is usually reserved for treatment-experienced individuals.

Sorry, I haven’t experienced any derm problems; HCV has been associated with AI issues- hopefully his doc can help with that. Make sure he proceeds with caution regarding treatment.

Take care,

Bill

There's really too many trials to be sure that I wouldn't be missing some of them.  The FDA approved ones that I'm aware of are:

Peg-Intron
Pegasys
Ribavirin
Copegus
Intron-A
Infergen (consensus interferon)
Roferon-A

Actimmune is FDA approved, but has to be written off label, I think.  The Actimmune I've used in conjunction with the Infergen and Riba.

Here's some of the trials:

Vertex950  (Telaprevir)
Alinia (which is FDA approved for another purpose), it's in trials now for HEP-C, but can be written for off-label.
SCH-50304
Albuferon
Thymosin

There's currently a trial out for using one of the statin drugs with Interferon & Riba.

And I believe that there's several other trials of drugs out that, as I said, I can't remember all the names of.  Your best bet would be to check out clinicaltrials.gov

Best to you,  Susan
