can I have shingles and herpes?

I am 47 years old and about a year ago, had a scare with herpes.  Culture was negative, so I opted for the anitbody test.  It was done 6 weeks later.  The tests results came back with a low positive.  I was prepared for the worst and the Dr reassured me that all it really meant was that I probably had a cold sore or something like that as a kid.  That I was fine.  Well, now I have a spot on the left side of my vagina.  Waiting for the test results and more behind my right ear.  I have been doing a ton of reading and now wondering if it is possible to have both.

just because you have genital herpes, doesn't mean that everything that goes on in your genital area is due to your herpes. plenty of other things it could be.  since you didn't even know this rash in the genital area was there, it could even be something fairly normal like fordyce spots or even just dry, irritated skin that looks different from the rest.

whatever is going on behind your ear isn't likely to be related either.

make more sense?

herpes is not the cause of everything that goes on in your genital area or your body .

But I already tested positive.  Do you mean something in addition?

it's doubtful that this is herpes then if you didn't even know it was there until you looked. follow up on it to get a better idea of what is going on.

It's not so much a vaginal issue.  To tell you the truth............I barely felt a thing.  Had it not of been for a digital camera.......I would have never had known there was a issue.  Another joy we "girls" get to deal with I guess.  It's more like a rash along my hairline and behind my one ear.  Very frustrating.  I have been doing tons of reading.  And as much of a fan of being educated that I am...........sometimes you can educate yourself into a nervous breakdown!  I will do as you said though.  Maybe I should go in and get the blood test done.  Not sure what kind, if any, of a benefit that would be though.  Just totally frustrated and still pretty angry with myself right now.

finish out the 2nd round and if you are still having symptoms ( or get another recurrence within a month ) , return to clinic and get properly tested for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally.  BV especially can mimic herpes as well as make it reoccur more often. Having it when you contract herpes or developing it soon afterward isn't too unusual for us gals :(

Grace, I am on my second round of antiviral because I wasn't sure when to stop taking it.  And yet think I am having another break out.  What should I do?

You are so right.... I mourned for a day, and realized it could be far worse.  I know this.  And not knowing was worse.  Now it's managing this and living with it.  To tell the truth, it's kind of a blessing in disguise.  That may sound strange.......but it's true.  Thank you for all of your help and there will be plenty of questions to come!!

well at least now you have answers as to what is going on.

if you haven't read the herpes handbook yet, I highly recommend doing so. it's free to read online or print out at home. the patient counseling video on the same site is also terrific and helpful to watch.

keep asking questions!

He did call and tell me that he had gone to a redicare facility and they just looked at it and gave him a medication for antibiotics that were taken 5 times a day for 10 days.  Can't believe they didn't test him.  I would be so mad if I were him.

if your culture is negative, I'd repeat the blood test then just to see if this is just a recurrence of a previous infection.

any chance the partner you had a month ago will get tested for herpes and share their results with you?

So, what I should do is wait for the culture results.  I have educated myself enough to know that a positive on the culture is a true positive.  At least I would like to believe I have educated myself enough.  Too little to late though.  And how long should I wait for the blood test if I had sex 1 month ago?  Thank you for your help!!

shingles is a reactivation of the herpes zoster virus. it has nothing to do with the herpes simplex virus that causes oral and genital herpes.  yes indeed you can be infected with both viruses.

your repeat herpes testing you had at 6 weeks the last time was done far too early. at this point you need seen for a proper evaluation as well as repeat your herpes igg blood testing to see what your status is.  sounds like your doctor wasn't very knowledgeable about herpes testing when you had it done :(
