Herpes Question

My girlfriend contracted herpes type 1 when she was a child. It is very rare and has gone years without an outbreak. I do know there are periods of asymptomatic shedding.  I do not have the virus. How high of a risk do I have on contracting the virus even if no outbreak present? We kiss and she has given me oral. I realize the virus is extremely common, I just don't want to contract it.

Asymptomatic Shedding is called that for a reason. Read about Acyclovir for example and how it works at lowering the risk of shedding and the risk of outbreaks. You definitely need to talk to a doctor about this. You need qjestiona answered medically.

Yes the virus does shed from time to time when no symptoms are present. The odds are low you would contract the virus when no symptoms are present but being in a relationship you are at risk as you are exposed often. Have you been tested? You may have it and not know it as well

I was in the same situation. My boyfriend had it and I didnt. However he hadn't had an outbreak for 14 years (since he contracted it as a child) and we had been together for 3years. I never got it until recently. I had an outbreak on my lips and somewhere down below... Just because they dont have an outbreak doesnt mean they arent contagious. Stay safe and use condoms!! Seriously. It completely changed my sex life now.
