Herpes and Childbirth

Im worried about the risks involved with childbirth if you have been diagnosed with herpes.

I'v heard and read things about it blinding your baby. I was just wondering whether anyone could help me clarify what the situation is on this? Does it tend to me we have to deliver by c-section?

Thanks in advance :)x

I also have genital herpes. As long as you were diagnosed (had your initial outbreak) before you became pregnant and have no visible leisons you can deliver naturally. Plus your baby will have some kind of immunity to it through you. Herpes is not a big deal phslysically as much as socially or emotionally.

There is a whole section on pregnancy and herpes in the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com for more reading.

If you have had genital herpes prior to being pregnant and have no obvious lesions at the time of delivery, the risk of transmitting to the baby during delivery are less than 1%. I f you have an obvious lesion at the time of delivery, a c section is in order.
