Herpes or Yeast Infection?

Lately I have had horrible pain on my vagina. I was sick for a week (sore throat/runny nose) and as the sickness went away I realized that there were a ton of blisters on the outside of my vagina. It burns to use the bathroom and I can hardly walk or move without wanting to cry. I got tested for syphilis, gonorrhea, etc but I was most worried about it being herpes! I got tested for herpes and my results will be back in 4 days, but I am wondering if it could be something else? When I got tested for herpes the doctor said that it looked somewhat like herpes but something was a little off. They did a swab test and started me on acyclovir which they said would reduce the pain/heal herpes blisters really quickly. (I have done some reading about this online and people said that this medicine almost cleared their outbreak within 2 days. I've been taking it for 2 days and there is no difference, it might actually be worse.) This is making me think that maybe it isn't herpes, but is a really awful yeast infection. I recently started having a milky white discharge that kind of just gushes out of my vagina, which seems to go along with the yeast infection. I'm miserable and my results don't come in for another 4 days, so my question is could I go to the pharmacy and get an over the counter yeast infection cream like Monistat or something and try to treat the yeast infection while I am taking acyclovir? Would it interfere with anything else going on? I don't have a primary care doctor so I got tested at a walk-in clinic, so asking my doctor about a simple question like this isn't ideal. Any input would be great thank you!

Hi, have a blood test to  confirm you herpes status but appears more of a result of your yeast infection. Yeast is fungal in nature and could surely cause the outbreak. Since it happened at the same time as your yeast could very well be connected. Have them swabbed again with a PCR test.

What you're experience sounds very much like a normal body's reaction to a new HSV infection and I think that, until he gets tested and proves otherwise, you should assume that he has HSV and passed it along to you.

Most people who have the virus are not aware that they have it.  Most people who transmit the virus do so when they have no symptoms whatsoever.

This is why HSV2 is such a difficult disease to track... way too many people have it and don't know.

I recently started dating someone new and we had been exclusive for a while so started having unprotected sex about 2 or 3 weeks ago. He isn't showing any symptoms but this doesn't mean he doesn't have it correct?

Also, I was planning on still taking the acyclovir but was just wondering if I could use the yeast infection cream at the same time. And I don't really have a doctor I just go to a walk-in clinic that costs way too much for a student like me each time :( Is there a way to get something like lidocaine over the counter?

Stick with the acyclovir for sure.  Also ask your doctor about a prescription for a numbing ointment like lidocaine to help ease the pain.

Stay with the Valtrex.

I've never heard of an initial outbreak (or a subsequent one) being resolved after just a couple of days on Valtrex).

What you're describing sounds very much like an initial genital HSV outbreak.  As hard as it is, save your money for now and wait for the results of the culture.

Good luck and I hope you feel better as soon as possible.  Try getting a prescription for something to help with the pain.

Hello there. The truth is this can be herpes or it can not be herpes. When was the last time u had sexual contact with someone? The reason i would lean towards herpes is obviously the blisters but as soon as i read that u had white discharge i started leaning the other way towards a yeast infection. To my knowledge herpes dosnt cause white discharge like u describe. If the culture comes back negative then go in fir blood work 12 weeks after ur last sexual encounter. Ask for a herpes type specific igg test, not igm!!! For now i wouldnt put anything on your area until the culture is back.

Good luck!!
