Did my boyfriend give me genital HSV-1?

Hello,
I would like to know what the odds are that the guy I'm seeing gave me herpes. Prior to our first sexual encounter, I had not been with anyone in any way for 3 and a half months. 11 days after our first hook-up, I began experiencing symptoms of my first outbreak and it was awful.

I went to the doctor for all STD testing, including a blood test, and she took a culture of my genital lesions. The blood test came back negative for everything, but the culture was positive for HSV-1. The doctor told me that the chances that my current partner gave it me are high because no antibodies were detected in my blood yet, indicating that the infection is so recent, my body hasn't had time to build up antibodies. I realize that in some cases, it can take up to 6 months for antibodies to appear in your blood. So of course it's possible that I got it from a previous partner, but I wanted to make sure. I told my current partner the news, and he got tested and his blood test came back negative.

To this day, he has never shown any symptoms. It has been exactly 2 months since we were last tested but I think he needs a re-test.

Thoughts???

8 weeks from today. The reasons he tested negative are listed below and testing at 8 weeks would shed some light on this.
1. he just contracted it.
2. hes in the 5% that missed the test.
3. hes one of the rare people who dont have antibodies show up in igg tests.
4. he took the wrong test, should be igG type specific not igM
5. He does not have it.
He mis informed you.

Thank you for the response. Just to clarify, do you mean 8 weeks from today, or 8 weeks from when he was lasted tested?

Hi, the doctor is correct that a negative blood test and a postive swab would surely indicate a recent infection and if the outbreak was all around the area, that also would indicate recent as long term herpes only breaks out on one side.
Since his blood test came out negative, its possible that he just contracted it as well and could either be genital or oral. I would suggest he retests in 8 weeks as a good indicator.
