Hi. My name is David. I've done my research. Actually hours of research since I found out I tested positive for hsv-2 from a std screening. Long story short. My ex and I are trying to get back together, but I did have protected sex with someone else after we broke up one time. That's the reason my ex wanted me to get tested before we got intimate again. I've had my fair share of partners in the past but just about always used condoms, unless we were together for a good amount of time. . But I was only with 2 partners in the past 2 years.
So I got a call last week I tested positive for herpes. The nurse didn't say much, and I was in a state of shock and didn't know what to ask. That's when I started my research. First thing I did was immediately called my ex, and told her since we use to have unprotected sex. She got tested and was negative for hsv-2. I can't get in contact with the last girl, but we had sex in December sometime and that's the last time I was intimate with anyone. I haven't had a 'noticeable" outbreak. I don't know when, or if I actually caught it. If it was the last girl even with the condom, or from years before. I know you can still get it with a condom, and also know that it won't pass unless it's shedding. I will never know if I caught it years ago and never shed to pass it along to my ex. Even Sometimes my toddler son would use my towel after a bath, so that's scary knowing he could have been at risk too.
I called back the doctors today to see what the antibody count was and ask questions. She said it was a 1.23. Which we know is very low and can be false positive. I tried asking more questions, but she was rushing me off the phone. She said it's pointless to do a retest because it'll be the same result, and they never heard of the western blot. She just wasn't very helpful. I know it's these 3 possibilities. Either it was a false positive, the virus has been dormant since I received it, or had a real mild outbreak and didn't notice.
Well I have a urologist appointment soon for a different reason, but since my primary was helpful I will take advantage and ask my urologist. The thing is, I don't know what to ask, or do. Should I get the same std test and see those results before the WB? I do want to get a western blot done, but if they don't offer how can get it done? I know it can be done through quest, but don't I need to go through a doctor first? I'm also severely financially limited since I've recently been laid off.
As I'm sure you know this is very stressful. I just want to be sure I do, or do not have it. I'm in my mid 20's, and just not willing to put anyone through any unnecessary risk even if they know. Some thoughts would be nice, and questions to ask the urologist, and steps to be taken. i know western blot is one, but can't afford it at the moment.
