Lysine as an Antiviral: Please Read

Also Posted in Expert forum:
Based on what I have read the last 3 months, the entire MedHelp STD team seems to be in lock-step in talking down the effects of lysine.

But, I'm scared as hell that the fact that I take it everyday (1g each morning), and have for the past year to prevent oral HSV1 outbreaks, has prevented me from reaching HSV2 detectable levels.  I worry after googling "lysine" and "antiviral" and seeing all of the varying resources - some of whom seem very knowledgeable - who state specifically that Lysene has antiviral properties.  Especially against herpes.  They don't differentiate between type 1 and type 2.

We have all read that daily antiviral therapy can drastically alter one's ability to produce antibodies.  I have, for the past 13.5 weeks (following a rare {for me} sexual encounter), been testing negative for HSV2 despite having numerous symptoms that seem consistent with new herpes infection (urethritis for over two months that no one seems to be able to diagnose, plus the entire scrotum is red and irritated off and on, strange flash-pings in the nerves all over my groin that come and go - not "painful" but more like reminding me that something is brewing).

Beginning tomorrow,  I will come off of the lysene just to see if things change.  Maybe I will finally have the outbreak that I've been waiting for.  Until then, I hope someone out there can help.  Lysene is not a myth.  It's incredibly effective in preventing cold sores.  I haven't had one in over a year.  I got 3 last winter... then began daily started the daily dose.

Please, ANYONE, share what you know about why/how the other herpes antivirals differ from Lysene in the way the inhibit the body's natural antibody response.  I don't want to wait another 3+ months to figure out if I have contracted the virus.

Thank you!

Ohhh... I don't know any of the values of my tests.  Long story.  My PCP can't get them... blah blah blah.  I just know: IgG <0.9 after weeks 4, 8, and 13

Thanks for reaching out, Fleetwood.  I'm trying to come to terms with the good news.  That sounds stupid, but it's true.  It's been a hard, hard last 4 months.  Hardest of my life and I hope I can start feeling normal today.

I'll google that condition tomorrow.  Tonight, my head is still spinning.

Haha yes Tim!  We learned a ridicules amount and honestly couldn't have done it without life360, fleetwood, grace, barefeet, and ehb and others.  I have heard about the stress in pelvis and prostate that fleet mentioned and thats why I am trying not to worry. I do notice it goes away when at work when I am not thinking about things.  But once my mind settles and I have nothing to do I start to notice it. Try drinking lots of water and cranberry juice.  And when I say lots go buy a jug of spring water and drink have a gallon a day for a while.  It may help flush your system.  I did that a few weeks ago and it helped but now it is bak. So maybe I should get on that again and do it for a longer period of time.  Anyway, congrats on your negative man.  Really glad you came out the way you where hoping.  Hopefully I got that negative result too!!! But I had a stinging burning red little sore type thing that appear on my scrotum a few weeks ago, so I am not quite sure if that was my outbreak or not.  Life and Ebh say it would not appear there, and did not sound like herpes.  All I can do it trust there knowledge!  But best wishes mate,  and best of luck to you and the girl you want to marry.  ~Raddly

L lysine is not an antiviral at all and would not in any way impact antibody production.

A lot of men with those symptoms do not have herpes, even those with herpes it is debatable whether it is the herpes that causes this.

About 50% of men get the symptoms you describe at some point in their lives, particularly 30s onwards. They can arise from many factors but particularly stress in the pelvis, prostate etc.

Look up prostadynia and you will come across a whole lot of men with stories just like you!

Thanks for the feedback.  We've learned alot about this virus the last few months, haven't we?

I always believe that I would breathe a sigh of relief at the thought of week 16 results being neg.  But, the truth is, I will go to bed wondering what's going on in my underwear again tonight.  I'm 36. I've talked myself into symptoms before; but my body is telling me something this time.  It's something... but what?

Just hoping that I can put Herpes behind me soon mentally.  But, nothing else I've heard of makes any sense either.

Also, Herpes would not cause constant symptoms.  If it did people would talk about it.

Hah, your symptoms are exactly like mine for the past 2 or 3 weeks.  Red urethra, burning urethra, burning scrotum that comes and goes, prickly feelings down below, and lots of dripping after urination.  I am trying to not let it get to me though, just waiting for that test.  Man, the negative at the 16 mark, I would take and put this behind you.  I do not think the Lysine would have any effect on the test.  It is natural compound you get from food, introducing more into your diet should not suppress the virus, Lysine is not an anti viral.  Try and accept the negative and see if your symptoms go away.

For anyone who might have read any of my numerous posts...

UPDATE:  Tested at Planned Parenthood (Boston, naturally) on Friday evening 1/24.  Exactly 16 weeks (and half a day) after the exposure that lead to multiple symptoms, which still persist today:
*Inflammed meatus (very raw looking and red, no pain in urination though)
*Inflammed glans (not painful, mainly just a red coloring that persists)
*significant drip after urination (every time)
*Pale, easily irritated patch of skin just to the left of meatus.  Derm. couldn't diagnose.  Nor has any other MD
*Scrotum skin red and irritated (comes and goes)
*Flashes in the nerves in/near my inner-thigh area (2-3 every few days)
*Itchy rectum (I'm hetero)
*Red veins throughout shaft with every erection (not the normal veins)
*Saggy, old looking skin all over penis (since October)

Anyway, Planned Parenthood tells me I'm negative... again.

Still not buying it.  Was on 1g Lysine for 14 straight weeks, and I'm pretty sure that has altered my antibody development.  Plus I'm HSV1 since 2nd grade...

Jesus, I almost wanted to hear them say positive to keep me sane!
