Married 17 years and just diagnosed hsv 1 genital

Okay, I'm female and have been married 17 years (both faithfully).  I just had an genital outbreak which I immediately went to the doctor for since it was nothing like I'd ever experienced.  The swab test came back HSV1+ genitally.  My husband and I have never had any cold sores...ever.

Is it possible to have it and never have an outbreak?
Does this mean my husband gave it to me?
Is it possible to transmit the virus through saliva that is used as lubrication during sex?

Thanks in advance!

statistically 1 out of every 2-3 people you know has hsv1. only about 20-40% of folks who have it orally, ever get obvious cold sores to know that they are infected. odds are that neither you nor your husband were ever tested for herpes to know who has what.

hsv1 genitally is typically contracted from receiving oral sex.

unless you have had another partner, you most likely contracted hsv1 genitally from your spouse.  it is possible that you contracted it years ago from a partner prior to this one and this was just your first obvious recurrence but more likely this was a recent infection from your partner.

keep asking questions!
