Using per year to put things into perspective but actually all you mention would be considered correct as well. It sheds 9-18% of the time.

If shedding is that common, then why isn't genitals hsv 1 outnumber hsv 2? Is there and researched done on shedding at all?

sheding has nothing to do with contracting it. It prefers the oral area.
