Oral blisters

A little confused about the appearance of oral HSV blisters.  I have read most places that they are usually "tiny" blisters that form in a cluster, and that sometimes merge to form "one large sore".

I have had two separate appearances of a single large--not tiny--blister-like head near my mouth.  Once on my mustache area, then about a month later on the skin below my lips.  (Neither time was the blister ever actually touching the lips themselves.)  At first, I thought they were just big whitehead zits, and when the doctor saw the first one he thought it was a sebaceous cyst.  I took antibiotics he prescribed for it and on the 2nd night of its appearance applied a hot compress.  It reduced in size almost in half that night and by the end of the week it was pretty much gone.  Slight scab (pinprick size) lingered a day or two, but that was that.

The second appearance happened recently and, like the first, was preceded by a mild soreness to the touch in the area prior to the appearance of the "zit".  (Not terribly unusual to me, since I've had such soreness before with pimples formation.)  The morning after the soreness there was a small, single whitehead forming.  As the day went on, it grew in size until it eventually resembled the first one I had.  At this point, it was not sore at all.  Well, I got home and thought I would go into the doctor the next day to get it swabbed, and while looking at it in the mirror I merely touched it to see how dense the pus build-up was....and it burst like a balloon!  I wasn't trying to pop it at all, it just busted.  And even though it had the appearance of a pustule, I saw no actual thick pus come out, just maybe a little clear fluid....which scares the heck out of me.

Still, the appearance of the blister things looked nothing like what is described or found in an Image search of oral herpes.  It was always just a single, rounded head, that grew to be quite large (not "tiny").  And this most recent one burst with zero effort on the same day it showed up. And after it burst, it didn't so much as even form a scab.  Just a little pink discoloration for a couple days and by third day the area almost looks like new.  If it were herpes, wouldn't it have gone through the ulcer/crusting phase?  The main thing that worries me is the clear fluid.  Could there be any other explanation for that?  Thanks.

The HSV-1 reading at 7 weeks was .50. . .which seemed on the high side to me, but still in the clear negative range.  (>.90 equivocal.)  By contrast, my HSV-2 reading was .07. I've heard conflicting opinions on whether or not the numbers themselves (i.e. high vs. low) mean anything outside of where they fall within the different positive/negative ranges, so it's hard for me to accept them as is. . .although I agree it's a fairly good sign.  Still, I feel like I need to test again after 12 weeks before I can completely move on.  Thank you for your input.

PS: Do you have any insight into whether or not the popped blister would have scabbed/crusted at all if it were caused by the HSV virus?  Is the fact that it did not a good sign that it must have been something else?  (Folliculitis?)

It refers to the lips. If you have herpes types blisters appearing on your face its a sign of a recurrent outbreak, meaning youve already had an out breakfore. Fist time sore symptoms would be at point of contact like your lips.
Showing negative at the 7 week mark is a good indicator that your negative as by that time a value of over 1 should have appeared.

Thanks.  I did take an IGG test 7 weeks past my exposure and came up negative for both HSV-1 and HSV-2.  I'm re-testing after the 12-week mark, but it could be somewhat dramatic for me find out that I picked an infection up recently.  (Would have been easier to cope if I knew I had it to begin with.)  Not sure how I would explain to GF....

Also, not 100% clear on what constitutes a "cold sore".  Does this only refer to blisters that appear ON the lips, or to any cluster of HSV-related blisters that pop up on the face?

Hi, have a herpes test to confirm your status. Watching, picking and worrying is not going to confirm anything. Its estimated that more than 60% of the adult population would test positive as was contracted at childhood. As a point a reference, cold sores appear on the lips not above or below so yours really dont seem herpes related.
