Recurring transmission of HSV-1

I have recently been diagnosed with genital HSV-1 which came from my boyfriend who has oral HSV-1.  What is the likelihood that I could pass the genital HSV-1 to him?  Also, as I am new to this, when the 1st is healing (no open lesions), am I safe to have unprotected oral and vaginal sex with my boyfriend since he already has it orally?   Thank you for your help!

I encourage you to google and read the free herpes handbook by Terri Warren. It has terrific info on herpes in general for you as well as specific info on hsv1 genital infections.

You and your bf should abstain from all sexual contact until your symptoms are healed completely. This is for your own safety as well as his. When you have recurrences of genital herpes, abstain again during that time.

Is your bf likely to contract hsv1 genitally from you since he has a well established oral hsv1 infection? No he is not.  He has significant protection against contracting hsv1 on other body parts but it is not 100% which is why we suggest abstaining from sex until healed.

For hsv1 genitally, recurrences tend to be few and far between for most people thankfully. Be sure though to discuss with your provider having a prescription for antivirals on hand each year so if you start feeling like a recurrence is starting, you can get medication to start promptly to help make it as mild as possible.
