Who's to blame

My boyfriend & I both recently tested positive for herpes 2. Mine was a swab test, his was a blood test. Is there a blood test that can be done to be able to tell if either one of us has old antibodies in our system so we know where it came from? If so, how long do we have to wait after our first outbreak to be tested? Neither one if us has had any signs nor symptoms until now.
And I've read that the virus can be in your system for many years without any signs or symptoms, and out of the clear blue show up, is this true?

Thank you Fleetwood so much for information. Surprisingly, my outbreak was not bad per my dr, only had 1 lesion and a couple small blisters, but hung around for about 12 days...bad enough to me tho!
I'm so thankful for this site, I've learned so much and now know that I'm not alone

I think it is the best thing you can do to have the blood test.

At that level, your partner's 3.15 result has about a 30% chance of being a false positive, typically.

Is your outbreak quite bad? More than one lesion?

If so then this means it is again quite certain that your partner is the source. A blood test result that is lower than his for example would increase this certainty!

If the test he took says the any number above 1.2 is positive, his 3.15 is not high and actually falls into a false positive range. Any number 3.5 and below needs a confirmation test. Yes do have a blood test and if your numbers are high 5 and above it could be infered youve had it a while.

I was mistaken, this is what the report said: HSV 2 IGG TYPE SPECIFIC
AB 3.15 H. At this point is there a need for me to have a blood test if my swab test came back positive? I'm very scared, confused, & mentally worn out from this right now. I've lost 7lbs in a week and I'm finding this very difficult to deal with. I know it isn't a death sentence, but moreso a very swift double punch to the gut I could've lived without, but now have to deal with forever

Should only be a few days as depends on the lab. it would really appear he doesnot have hsv. He should test asap again or just got it. If your blood test comes back negative, it would imply recent.

He did have an IgG test that showed .90-1.10 as equivocal and over 1.10 as positive. His was at .90, listed as equivocal. If I have a blood test now how long do I wait between tests? Weeks or months? What does it mean if I have a low or negative test?

If your partner has a firmly positive IgG HSV2 test result and you are having a bad enough first known outbreak to have sought medical advice and a swab, then it is virtually certain your partner is source.

What were his exact blood test and results?

Make sure your swab was correctly typed.

Yes the virus can at times not produce symptoms for years in between for some people. However they will test positive in blood tests for IgG antibodies their whole life.

One thing you could do is obtain a blood test straight away and see if you have a negative or low value for HSV2 IgG antibodies that subsequently becomes strongly positive.

To be honest though, you are in a 'so what' position. It could have easily have been the other way around. How do you want this to impact your relationship?
