Why is there a difference here?

If you need time and friction (the kind associated with sex) to get herpes, then why might you be able to transmit it from sharing chaptstick just because it stays moist? Theres not much time or friction with chapstick, certainly not the kind associated with intercourse.

Wouldn’t that be saying as long as somethings moist and touched an infected area, that thing could spread it?

When you use a chapstick, you rub it on your lips, right? You aren't just touching it to your lips.

And it's just a theory that chapstick might spread it, it's not for sure. It's just something that, if you're being really careful about not getting it, you should avoid. (You should avoid it anyway, since it could spread the flu, colds, covid, staph, MRSA, etc.)

Yeah but its a pretty quick application, the “time” and even friction part is definitely not a factor here. The time associated with sex is definitely longer lol

Hands can rub too..so under this logic, you could spread it by rubbing moist hands on mucas membranes after they touched an infected area
Yes, but there is exposure to air with hands - also movement, time, etc.

There is no exposure to air with chapstick. You use it, cap it.

Again, it's a theory - a "please be really careful as there is the potential to transmit hsv1 with lip balms, so don't share". There is no really hard evidence that it can happen.

We know that hands don't spread herpes. If it were that easy, everyone would have it.

Is there a specific reason you are asking?
