Forgot to add, I am thinking now that there is too much risk to give him oral when I don't even have a sore! It is just making me nervous as hell. I have already given him oral tons of times when I didn't have a sore...so maybe I should just quit worrying?
You really should stop worrying, I have had coldsores since I was a kid too and they are embarrasing and they hurt. but like you said, dont touch it or let him drink after you. keep your hands clean. But I tell you the best thing in the world for me was to take vitamins called Olive leaf with Echinacea and andrographis and a multivitamin. Works very well for all herpes types and is great for the immune system.
90% of people in the world have some sort of herpes coldsores being the majority of everyone. This is nothing to be ashamed of. I have never had some one not want to be with me because of them. I just stay away from kissing and sharing drinks or anything like that.
Be happy you have a loving man and move forward and dont dwell on this small matter of your life. there are many many qualities that about you I am sure the over take any dang coldsore. they are common for soooooo many people. I hope this help :)
has your partner been tested to know his status? just because he doesn't have a history of cold sores, doesn't mean he doesn't already have hsv1 orally himself.
you also should be seen the next time you have your symptoms to make sure that indeed this is all hsv1 related. many times symptoms in the corner of the mouth are angular cheilitis, not herpes.
do you have herpes antivirals on hand to take at the start of a cold sore recurrence?
grace
Thank you so much for your responses. I had no idea that you guys wrote back!
Grace- He has never been tested for hsv1, but he probably does have it...considering most of the population does, I would rather be safe than sorry though. Actually I believe this might be the first time I had a cold sore in the corner of my mouth. They are always in different places, its weird when I read most people get them in the same section of their mouth. Yes, I do have antivirals (acyclovir) to take when I get an outbreak. I was silly and didn't take it because I only had one batch left and didn't want to waste it. I thought this was only gonna be a small sore, which it was worse than I thought, but not too bad. I am going to the doc today to get another prescription to be prepared. What is your opinion on suppression therapy with acyclovir?
Sweets- thanks for your advice. I was probably overreacting. Today the cold sore is basically almost healed except where my mouth opens it still hasn't healed and keeps cracking. But the rest of my scab flaked off and now there is just a red spot. I know that these cold sores are just a little nuisance and I shouldn't let it take over my life. It is just hard when they are so embarassing. I am happy that my partner views them as basically nothing. Sucks not being able to kiss him tho :(
Ok, I just got back from the doctors. They are putting me on acyclovir (one 200mg pill, twice daily). In three months, I will come back for bloodwork to make sure my kidneys are functioning right and everything is ok. That dose is half the normal dose because I was scared and the doc said we will start there and move up if need be. Is suppression therapy safe? I am getting worried now. She said I could change my mind anytime. What do you think?
you don't need any blood work from being on acyclovir. Your provider is very behind the times!!!
You need to be taking at least 400mg acyclovir twice a day for suppressive therapy. it isn't going to be effective at the lower dose.
there are no long term side effects to suppressive therapy with acyclovir. we have info on people being on it suppressively non-stop for over 25 years now ( I myself have been on it more than I haven't for 25 years now even ).
Well, I decided just not to do it. I called and spoke to the nurse and told her.the doctor told me to call her if I didn't want to take it, but the assistant wouldn't let me talk to her! I want to have acyclovir just for breakouts. The doctor told me I could call her when I felt one coming and she would put in a prescription for me. Well, I don't believe this, because I got it three times before and then the 4th time (this time). I called to get it and she made me make an appt, and then 4 days later I finally see her. At that point, what is the use of taking it??
I want to have it on hand. What if I get one during the weekend or can't get a hold of this lady?? I go to a low income doctor and they can be real difficult to talk with. I probably need a new doctor.
I called walgreens and my prescription for the 30 day supply is still there. Can I legally pick this up when I called and told them I didn't want to do the suppressive therapy? I would love to have that supply on hand, but I don't wanna get in trouble for taking it.
you can fill this prescription and take 2 200mg pills 3x/day for 5 days with ob's or even 4 200mg pills 3x/day for 2 days just to treat recurrences. you shouldn't need an appointment for a prescription, they should be able to just give you one.
